Tint on 970. Need some advice please!

I'm scheduled to get the Pan tinted on Tuesday and I have a box sitting in front of me from TintProtector.com. I was set to install it before the appointment but the instructions say due to the "chemicals" tinters use, if installed before hand, you run the risk of degrading the adhesive properties of the moleskin.

The instructions later say to install the moleskin after tint is applied... By rolling. down. the windows. What!? And risk scratching the brand new tint?

I'm not sure how to best tackle this. Do I install beforehand and run the risk of the adhesive turning to goop and streaking the windows, or after the tint install and run the risk of scratching the tint trying to protect it?

Any advice?

I'm not sure of the specific sequence, but my expert tinter partnered w/ a shop specializing in P-cars to remove all door panels to properly install the moleskin prior to tinting. My original tint was severely scratched because the original owner did not install properly. Find someone who has done this before and knows what they're doing, or you may be very disappointed. Best of luck!

I can handle removing the door panels, and installing the moleskin. My primary concern was whether the adhesive will actually be compromised after tint is installed because of the soapy water used to apply said tint.

I take it you haven't had any issues with the moleskin after your tint was applied?

No issues whatsoever and it's been a year. No scratches at all. Good for you for tackling this job - I know in my case the car was prepped first by the shop and then the tint was applied. Also, IIRC it was all done in a day so no extended dry time (maybe they used a dryer?)

Due to the tight space between glass and sweeper, some member in the forum complaint they hear squeaking noise when they roll windows up and down. For that reason I don't want to spend $$ to tint all windows. I decide to have it done in the back and back small windows and front windshield. That takes care the significant heat inside the car. I got it done yesterday for $380. the temp in the peninsular bay area is 90 today. If you are in Southern Cal and inland, it will be HOT ... the biggest glasses in the front and back will help to reduce with tint

Appreciate the input guys.

Shortly after skiracer13 posted I went ahead and took the door panels off and installed the moleskin. Overall it's a pretty easy job, just gotta be careful and I've gotta hand it to Porsche because the door panels are crazy simple to remove; -5 points for not having felt/moleskin on the rubber in the first place, but +10 points for how easy it is to remove the door panels.

Some pics:

Thanks man I appreciate it and I do try as much as I can myself. Can't remember which thread I posted in, but I recently knocked out the 60k mile service, unfortunately haven't got to the PDK flush just yet though, but will eventually.

Nicely done! I've considered redoing my tint on the Panny to add moleskin as well.

Welp tintprotector.com is where I got it and it comes with very detailed instructions. I went to YouTube for door panel removal vids and the 2top vids are perfect (1 for front door, other for rear door). If you've ever taken the center console out of any car, you can do this job. Be sure to use those polymer trim removal tools and you're set.

No problem man, glad I could help in some way. Sorry to hear about your tint, it's really kinda crazy with so much thought into everything else about the car, no one at Porsche thought this might be an issue for owners who wanted non-oem tinted glass.

Let me know when you get it installed and any thoughts you have after.

Man. Now I'm curious how many of you had to redo the tint? Maybe start a poll and get some info, cause I know it's not cheap.

When I started down this tint rabbit hole I looked all over for average ceramic install prices and I was seeing anywhere from $600-1k, like damn. Happy to report I'm getting ceramic on all windows for $450, I think the windshield strip $25. I would love to get the windshield done, but I've got a stupid chip in it that looks like it'll spiderweb any minute. So a $25 strip on the top isn't too bad if it actually happens.
