Throttle Body cleaning?

hey all, ive noticed a heavy lagged throttle response from a stand-still or when backing up slowly and I was told to first try doing a few reset proceedures to the throttle and PDK and also to try cleaning the throttle body.

For cleaning the throttle body is that just opening the throttle plate and using a tool with a rag on the end of it to clean the throttle body? Are you suppose to spray some cleaner inside the throttle body once the throttle plate is open? Might that mess up a sensor? If i just clean it with a rag will it improve the throttle response at low rpm?

Any opinions are appreciated

Look up “DIY: Intake Valve Cleaning”. Should pull up a thread about CRC Intake Valve Cleaner. It’s a silver canister.

will it make the car run smoother when accelerating from stop lights?

People claim so. My more aggressive approach may have damaged something. If you look at the before pictures of the valves Normalfellow posted you can see how much carbon deposits get stuck on the valves. The throttle flap/butterfly had a little dirt on the bottom edge. The valves on ours looked quite similar to the posted pictures, even at less than 50k miles. (I don’t remember how many miles was on Normalfellow’s engine when he took the before pictures). Applying the intake valve cleaner seems to clear up the dirt on the flap at the same time. I didn’t have an assistant to rev the engine up to recommended speed but I was able to short bursts at idle without stalling.

Before the HPFP symptoms and after the dealer did the throttle adaptation reset driving home felt smooth as silk. Both my son and I noticed.

Throttle body cleaning is different from valve deposit cleaning. To clean the throttle body, you can either remove it and spray it, or leave it on the car and spray it. Use the correct TB cleaning spray or you can strip off the coating and the blade will start to rust. My guess is that you won't see much of an improvement from cleaning the TB. Cleaning the deposits on the backside of the valves, properly, is usually done with media blasting. Most commonly walnut shells. You can DIY this job. Its not hard at all, but intimidating for those that are not skilled wrenchers.

The CRC cleaner is good, but it does not do as good of a job as media blasting. It tends to leave more deposits on the backside of the valves.

i have noticed on the panamera the throttle response is quite delayed and it is hard to accelerate from a stop smoothly...it is a little jerky sometimes and i have to press on the pedal a bit to get it to accelerate smoothly. I also notice this sometimes when backing up from slow speeds. i also have quite a bit of oil consumption (1l/2000km aprox.)

Hey Shrike I heard that using teraclean machine to clean the fuel injectors/throttle body will help this issue, is this the same thing that you are speaking of? do you think this will help with the issues?

Believe it or not, your oil consumption is within normal spec for these cars. A good shop will pull and clean the injectors at the same time they media blast the intake valves. If you do not have a blaster (and most do not), you can still DIY the intake valve cleaning if you're good with a wrench. The intake manifold has to come off, but that's not a difficult job. Then use a dental pick, CRC cleaner and a shop vac. Go slow and be careful and gentle. Pull the injectors and spray them with CRC and scrub till clean. Get some new o-rings for them and re-install. Get some new seals for the manifold and re-install. Done. The pick will not do as good of a job as walnut blasting, and an indie should charge under $750 for the work.

How many miles on the car? When was the last tune up and what was done? When was the last time the plugs were done?

thanks for reply, do you think its worth 750 for the performance increase it gets on a car with 50000 miles? is this walnut cleaning the same as the teraclean system? will it help smoothen out the acceleration? i notice throttle lag when accelerating from a standstill where i press on the pedal lightly and nothing happens until i press harder on the acceleration and then sometimes it jerks....

This product may be a good option if the throttle lag issue persists (don't have one on my PTT but had one on my 996 and loved it):

No, Teraclean pumps a fluid through your fuel system to clean injectors. It may do a fine job at that, but it will not touch the intake valve deposits. Have you taken it in and had it scanned? You may have some silent codes stored that may help you figure out what is going on.

Do I have to go to the dealer to get the silent codes?
