Is it a Turbo S or plain boring old Turbo?
Is it a Turbo S or plain boring old Turbo?
I'm looking at purchasing a 2010 Turbo model. I thought i'd read that the Turbo S designation wasn't a thing until the 2012 model years. But the car i'm currently looking at has Turbo s badging on it. Vin analytics shows it as a base turbo model. But i'm not even sure the Turbo S code would show up there. Anyone know if there is such a thing as a 2010 Turbo S model or is it just someone doing a little bit of rebadging?
that’s what I figured. It’s not a big deal. I just wanted to make sure when it came to negotiating I wasn’t calling them out incorrectly.
When I was looking for my Turbo S, there were a large number of Turbo cars marketed as Turbo S. Many of them ended up being Turbo cars with the Chronos package. Same power but were missing a whole bunch of other items. A number of them had the "S" badge on the back, as well, but a peek under the hood or the dash on start up pics indicates otherwise.

That said, a well equipped Turbo can have everything a Turbo S has, outside of the bump in power, gray engine cover, and Turbo S badging. Give the Turbo a nice tune and it'll be faster than a Turbo S.
There is a Turbo Power Kit option that nets the same power as the Turbo S (well, really close 540 versus 550 HP). And, you can always tune a Turbo S, for more power, as well. If the tuner has a specific map for the S, then it maintains a little more horsepower than a tuned Turbo. I did the standard item on mine with an air filter, IPD plenum and tune.
"The Turbo Powerkit features two new, lighter turbos for improved engine response. In order to boost output from the Panamera Turbo's 4.8-liter, twin-turbocharged V-8, Porsche opted to swap out turbochargers. For even better response, the engine control unit has also been updated, for total output of 540 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque -- increases of 40 and 37, respectively. When equipped with the Sport Chrono Package, torque rises to 590 pound-feet in Sport Plus mode." It is an option on the 2011 Turbo models for about $20k. Not a popular option. In 2012, they released the Turbo S which is simply a package of the available go fast goodies, as you cited, along with some specific interior trim items.

yeah, I forgot that the early Panameras has the Power Kit option available. With other options added, it can be roughly equivalent to a Turbo S. But a badge on an early car would still be added afterward
