Help a friend with 993 purchase. Need advice.

Hey all,

I'm hopping over from the 997 forum. I love 993's and have a buddy that I've been working on to get one for a while. Now he's found one he likes and asked me what to look out for in which years. I am not familiar enough to answer but told him to watch this forum. So can you guys chime in and give him some advice. Valve guides, oil usage, any other quirks specific to any particular year?

Thanks in advance.

If he is looking to avoid the CEL problem triggered by clogged SAI ports, he can look to stay with an OBD1 car (1995). The downside is that he would have to stay with a narrow body car if that's an issue and he with get a non-variocam set-up and lose a little hp.
Regardsless of the model year, a thorough PPI including a leak-down and compression test is a must.
The worn valve guide issue is one of those that is a bit overblown IMO. Many of us have never had a problem.
Happy shopping to him.
Bob

I was offered a 1995 Carrera4 Cabrio with 40k miles for my 73 Cherokee 140 airplane. It's a silver with a hideous GREEN interior/top. How much are these 993 Cabrios going for? Are there any specific problems with the 993s? What important service records should I request? KBB quoted me $20k, NADA however quoted me $30k retail. The airplane's value is at $30-35K. Any help would be welcomed.

It really depends on condition and service history. If it is mint with all records, maybe low $30s. If it is rough, has had paint work, has been hit or has no service records probably mid 20s. The green interior may knock more off of the value. Ask for ALL service records. Look for regular oil changes, and major service at 30k miles. At 40k miles it probably doesn't need a new clutch but if it has had one it's a bonus as it costs $3500-4000 at a shop. Do not buy (or trade an airplane for) a Porsche without getting a PPI by an experienced Porsche technician.

There are really not a lot of differences between years.

EARLY 95's has slightly different rear suspension arms. A lot were changed under warranty.
95's have ODBI, & NO-varioram, 272HP. They STILL have the SAI problem, just the ODBI does not monitor it.
96's have 282hp, with Varioram. Varioram is a adjustable intake plenum, giving a better power curve, & much more midrange. 96 ECU's are ODBII & can NOT be chipped.
97-98 282hp, Varioram, ODBII can be chipped.

Really no year is more/less then the others, only real slight differences. My advice is to get the nicest one you can with the best history. You really want to make sure it gets it's yearly oil change & has had several fluid changes over the years. Some of the super low mi cars might still have the factory fills in the trans, diff, brakes, etc..

Thanks Stealth. All good information. I have had several Porsches over the years. A '64 SC, '73 Targa, 2 914's, a 996 and my current 997 but have never owned a 993. And I really love 993's. I've actually thought about selling my 997 and getting a 993. Wish I could have both but my garage is full and bank account empty.

A white 97' 911 s would be my first choice if I was in your friends position. Yellow would be my second choice followed by silver.
