Sounds fair if you're willing to pay for it. But I'd spend my money on a proper diagnosis which would likely lead to discovering that you need a new transfer case and your transmission is just fine.

Agree entirely on the transfer case being the issue. I have not heard of a single transmission failure on the 958 series cars.. it seems ZF can make transmissions that are reliable, they just have a little problem with transfer cases.

Interesting - now I have one confirmed transmission failure - at high miles. The replacement is about half what I expected Porsche would charge..

Targa and Jay.

Difficult expenses. Thanks for sharing.

Did either of you change the trans fluid since ownership? Just curious if original high mileage fluid caused the premature failure.

There have actually been quite a few success stories of a fluid change fixing the transfer case slippage. Make sure you use the Porsche stuff, only takes 1 bottle. Its about $50 and can be completed in under 1 hour.

Fingers crossed that will fix it for you!

Actually, meant the ZF transmission, not transfer case.

Had any of these had their ZF trans fluid changed well before these repairs?

TIA.

Joseph,
I'm the second owner, purchased after the the engine and transmission was replaced. I plan to replace the fluid soon. I have almost 40K on the second unit.
I doubt the original fluid was changes as Porsche states 16 years/160,000 miles.

Thanks. I just don't get these extended changes over 100K miles, no matter how great the fluids are and tolerances these days. Maybe it's a generation thing with me, but am sensitive about the environment.
