How to install Sirius Radio or XM in 15 minutes for $39
How to install Sirius Radio or XM in 15 minutes for $39
Just like the title says, "How to install Sirius Radio or XM in 15 minutes for $39."
This tutorial is for you:
-- If you always wanted satellite radio but couldn't afford the cost
-- If you are saving money for Navtv or something else later
-- If you are affraid of an installation nightmare
-- If you can't locate a good shop in the area
-- If you are not mechanically inclined
I'm going to show how to put Satellite Radio in your Porsche and literally be listening to music without touching a screwdriver in 15 minutes. This is so simple, anyone can do it. No tools required. Grab a beer and enjoy the ride.
For purposes of this installation, the example Porsche is a 997, but most other vehicles including non-porsche can be installed on the same principle.
Here's what is needed for the project:
1) Stratus 4 Radio + Vehicle Kit: $39.99
http://shop.sirius.com/edealinv/serv...75&oldParentID
This is all the equipment which includes the radio, holder, dash mount, brackets, micro antenna, cigarette plug & more.
2) Trim Tool. Can be found at most stereo shops for $5.

3) Double sided tape squares or mounting tape.

Can be found at office supply store.
---------------------------------------
Here's the basic concept. The Stratus 4 radio is known as an RF modulator. It sends a wireless signal to an empty channel on the PCM (stereo). The Stratus 4 radio can be placed on top of the dash, face, center console or wherever. For purposes of hiding the wires I placed mine to the left of the PCM. It's within reach and out of the way.
To get the Stratus 4 running within 15 minutes, you are going to attach the cigarette lighter and circular antenna. Place the antenna next to the windshield so it has a line of sight view to the sky through the window.
A) Plug cigarette lighter into available outlet.
B) Plug circular antenna into Stratus (there is another wire one, not needed) and place next to the glass.
C) Program the Stratus 4 radio "transmitter" to an empty fm frequency (89.1, 90.1 or in my case 106.5 MHZ). For some reason, there was a cleaner signal at the upper end of the band. Select the same "receiving" frequency on the PCM.
D) Call Sirius for activation. Takes a few moments.
Done.
That's it. That's as hard as it gets. Anybody can set this up with no effort and be listening to satellite radio.
---------------------------------------
Select your mounting location for the Stratus 4, but keep in mind the antenna and power wires will be connected.
Use the double sided tape or tapes squares and place on clean area. An alchohol wipedown is important. Attach the tape to the back of Stratus 4 radio and stick into place.
Run the two wires from the Stratus to their desired locations. The is a lot of room behind the PCM, so run your wires. This is wear the "trim tool" comes in. All you are going to do is tuck the wires into the cracks by pushing them in gently. Avoid screwdrivers! If you need to take a shortcut, a popsicle stick is safer.
Advanced users be advised the power output of the cigarette lighter is 5.1 volts and not 12 volts. If you are planning on hard-wiring to another source it must be 5 volts.
Solution for ignition power: Hard wire a cigarette plug extension cable to the fuse box. This will allow you to keep the built-in Sirius 12 volt to 5 volt step down converter.

*Remember to turn off the unit when exiting the car.

Schosche RF modulator and two US to Euro antenna adapters from Crutchfield will allow a hard wired connection to your radio rather than transmit and recieve. It is not CD quality but you never have to worry about interference.
Hold up.. so for $39 you get a plug and play system?? wow
I can't find where you can purchase this setup from though.. where you get it?
