Exclamation Durametric: Will not work with Asus laptops

A bit unfortunate, but the Durametric will not work with the newer Asus laptops as they use a non-standard USB 3.0 port. The Durametric is written for standard USB 2.0 ports.

I have tried it on my Asus laptop running Windows 7 and as soon as the cable is plugged into the USB port, the laptop blue screens! I have tried many different combinations and after many re-bootings I do get it to work, but it's a bit touch and go.

I have spoken to Owen at Durametric and they do not have any plans to re-write their drivers for this non-standard USB 3.0, which is totally understandable.

If anyone has a workaround, please share. Else, be aware of the Asus issue with the Durametric

I thought USB 3.0 was supposed to be 100% compatible with older 2.1 and 1.0?

From what was explained to me, is that Asus is not a standard USB 3.0 and thus not quite compatible.

It was interesting that as soon as I said "blue screen", Owen asked if I had an Asus laptop.

Curious if anyone found a work around to this problem for Asus laptops?

I had exactly the same thing (blue screen crash) when trying Durametric on my 1 year old Asus laptop. Unfortunately Durametric couldn't tell me much other than to try a non-usb 3.0 laptop.... it sounded like the issue extends beyond just Asus and potentially impacts any laptop that uses the same controller for USB 2 & 3.

Thanks

I thought this was interesting... I had to install VCDS to clear an error code on my wife's audi and found that Ross Tech had special drivers to deal with what sounds like this exact problem. Quoted from the install guide:

"Install Special USB Drivers should be used only on very late model PCs with Fresco Logic USB 3.0chipsets. The previous stable drivers which are considered “Standard” in this Release 11.11.1 are not compatible with PCs that have Fresco Logic USB 3.0 ports and may cause “BSOD” crashes on those machines, hence such machines should use these “Special” drivers instead."

And indeed my Asus laptop uses the Fresco Logic USB board and these "Special drivers" worked perfectly on my Asus and I was able to use VCDS without issue. Now if only Durametric would do the same!

Well i had that same sort of factor happened to my ride . . . . Unfortunately Durametric couldn't tell me much other than to try a non-usb 3.0 laptop . . . . it seemed like the problem expands beyond just Asus and possibly effects any laptop that uses the same operator for USB . . . .

You might try using one of the many USB adaptors. There's a few that translate USB 2.0 to a LAN port. Might work for you.

Bumping this thread almost a year later. Will at Durametric mentioned that Asus owners have had success by: 1) Updating Windows (if you don't have it set to do so automatically); and, 2) Updating drivers through the Asus website.

This worked! I went to http://www.service.asus.com/, entered my model number, went to the "USB" section and downloaded the patch. Running "addpatch.bat" allowed the durametric cable and software to run with no problems.

I seem to have to run the "addpatch.bat" program after every restart, but that has been the only downside so far.

My understanding is the USB 3.0 is the problem, period. Regardless of manufacturer. I bought an Asus with both 2.0 and 3.0 about 4 months ago and working flawlessly with Durametric on the 2.0 port.

Durametric mentions that the USB 3.0 ports from some manufacturers are a problem. But, this is a separate issue related to the Fresco Logic USB controller used by Asus. My laptop is about 9 months old and the Durametric software won't work on either USB 2.0 or 3.0 without the patch.
