Novice programs in socal (orange county)?

I just got my cayman s and I would like to start tracking the car, but I don't have any experience so I am seeking some pointers on which program/school I should go to in socal (orange county) area.

I was thinking of just signing up to go Button Willow, but maybe I should get some experience with an instructor first before i go venture on my own.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

Most driving events will almost always have an instructor with you your first sessions. All the events I have been to so far work in this manner... At registration the day of the event you are placed into a group. For us there was group 1A, 1B, and group 2. Group 1 a and b both had instructors with them, but were just broken up so there werent as many cars on the track at once. Now group 2 were drivers who had enough expierence to where the instructors felt they could drive solo. It's really all up to your pace and how well you pick up the driving lines and feel of the car, but at the end of the day you still have to get the sign off from an instructor, at least thats how it works for where I have been so far.

Definitely check out POC, I started with them as well. It's reasonably affordable and you get instruction.

I just came from a road track event at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana (I hope I didn't get the name wrong). It's not terribly far from the OC and it's a nice track.

There will be another event tomorrow as well. The entrance fee is $10.00 for a spectator. I know they have their own instructors, but I'm not sure of the price. My friend registered his car, a 3rd gen Mazda RX-7, for about $160.00 w/o an instructor (you have to register in advance, if I'm not mistaken). You can go tomorrow and check it out first hand if you haven't previously been to a track. Although, it may rain.

Forgot to mention: They have an amatuer group.

Did you track your car or were u a spectator? Is it auto crossing (with cones in a parking lot) or more of an actual track like Button Willow?

I haven't got my clear bra installed yet, have an appointment next week so as soon as I get this done, I'm going to track events.

Thanks for the heads up!

You're welcome. I was just a spectator today.

It should be a permanent track. You actually drive on part of the oval (Nascar) and then come in to an infield area. I wish I had pictures with me. I took some from outside and inside the car, but I used my buddy's camera. I forgot mine at home if you can believe it.

They also had autocross, but that was in a parking lot.

You should go check it out if you have time tomorrow. I believe the first group ran between 8am and 9am. I could be a little wrong though.

I'm trying to find actual pictures of the track, but I'm not having luck. I will post the ones I took as soon as my friend e-mails them to me if you want. I'm proably not using the correct search words.

Here's the track set up.

TJ Galati is infamous around these parts
SCCA, PCA, POC are all good groups. They usually have instructional courses, and instructors at every event. You can learn as much as you want.

Also, get some books. Speed Secrets and Going Faster!

Rotaz,

Here are some pics I took from the passenger seat.

I'll post a link to the video, pending my friend's permission.
