what tires to get 997 gt-3
what tires to get 997 gt-3
hi guys any help ... going to do some track events i'm ordering a set of hre comps and thinking about going with the same tires that came with the car.original tires are michelin piolesport cups 235/35/19 fronts & 305/30/19xl rears.is this the way to go ? or something elce ? thanks
That's a good choice for trackdays. The next thing up would be Hoosiers or other slick-type tires. Unless you are VERY familiar with your car on the track, the MPSCs will be much better since their breakaway is more progressive. Even better would be to do some events on regular street tires like PS2s or something until you get comfortable.
Good luck and have fun!

thanks chris for your help! i just got the car a couple weeks ago & its my first porsche. i know handeling will be very different with the x-tra weight in the rear. i will stay away from the hoosiers for now,and try a couple of events with the oe tires. thanks again
do you have any track experience?? If not please dont take that car to the track with the cup tires... Get familar with the car first chris gives good advice. I would start with street tires first. Much more communicative. The cup tires break away with much less warning and I have seen MANY new GT3 owners put their beautiful new cars into a wall at a DE!!
Awesome car will be the best at the track just take it easy and be safe!!

thanks tom for the advice. yes i've done two previous driving events 1st @ limerock and 2nd @ pocono north cource with the bmw club with my m3.the tires that came with this car , are the cup's.yesterday i was at a new jersey porsche swap meet , and a rep from BBS WHEELES was their theaes wheeles very nice, but not sure if they make rear wheels in 12'' for the rears or maybe coming out soon? should i have another set of wheels and tires so i can swap back and forth . so should i get a set of street tires ps2's or what.i am a very egressive driver!!! thanks
since u arleady have MPSC u might want to try the Corsa System. it's OE tire for GT3/RS as well. i loved the Corsa System. had them on the 360CS & 996 GT3. check with Rack. not sure if they're available now.

Corsa System was first introduced when the Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale came out. it was used as OE tire. Porsche used it as OE tire as well for the 996 GT3 RS in Europe. i had it on my 996 GT3 just to try it out. i liked very much. it's sorta between PS2 & MPSC. it has more grip than PS2 but it doesn't require the temp as MPSC. it's a good performance tire for street & some track use.

I would get the MPS2's and run through a set of them first as suggested above.
Make sure you check the pressures after your runs these really heat up. Keep them at 40 max hot. Watch for inside wear also. You can have rears flipped side to side for more life (direction is only for rain pattern)
the cup tires will not last long and although DOT approved and yes I drive them around they are really considered a "track" tire.
Depends on how much you want to go to the track as for a second set of wheels. then the question is how to get them there, trail the car etc so a slippery slope.
Take it slow and and fun. Best option will be MPS2's on your "nice" wheels and a set of Cups or Hoosiers on your track wheels.
Most important is getting that car to the track as much as possible!

First off, if you want a track wheel and tires package put an 18" on the car. The car will handle much better and there are many more tire choices..
The Sport cup is a good all around tires. As is the Toyo Ra-1
I have tested on Pirelli. Michelin , Hoosier and Toyo's.
I think one of the best tires for a beginner is the RA-1 offers good feed back long life and they are predictable.. ( these are best run shaved and not full tread)- We race on these in Speed GT its the spec series tire. So I am a little more biased towards these . I do have the most data on these tires..
For comparison we also ran these on the (car in my sig)during the Time Attack Finale at buttonwillow and won overall.. The 700hp+ Purpose built time attack Skyline GTR was on Hoosiers and was slower...
The Michelin Sport Cup is my second choice and is stickier than the Toyo.
Hoosiers will offer the most grip of the bunch but will fall off in terms of performance after each heat cycle.
The Pirelli's were my least favorite of the bunch..
DOTR tires on the street behave much differently on the track.
Perhaps your money is better spent on a driver school and some driving instruction before you worry about tires....Just my .02 cents...
