The Aston Martin AM-RB 001 Has Been Given a New Name: Valkyrie

The AM-RB 001 is back in the news again. Need a refresher on the AM-RB 001? Here’s the deal: the car was a collaboration between Aston Martin and Red Bull Racing’s F1 team. It’s stunning all carbon bodywork is a giant aerofoil on wheels. There are many nods to aerodynamic efficiency, chief among which is massive underbody diffuser that channels air from behind the front wheels, under the body and out the back. It’s powered by mid-mounted, naturally-aspirated V12, co-developed with Cosworth. Power figures were not announced beyond a “1:1” figure, which means 1 horsepower per kilo. These are hyper exclusive vehicles, with a planned production run of 99-150 “street” versions, and 25 race-only models.

That’s the low-down on AM-RB 001, so what’s up now? Well, this amazing collaboration between Aston Martin and Red Bull Racing’s F1 team has been given a name: Valkyrie. The Aston Martin Valkrie continues a proud tradition of bestowing high performance Astons with a “V” name. This all began in 1951 with the release of the original Vantage, a high performance variant of the DB2. Following that, the DB5 generation of car saw a Vantage name plate as well. In 2005, a new Vantage was released, this time, as a standalone model, separate from the DB9.

Since then, additional “V” models have hit the scene. Virage, Vanquish, and the mighty Vulcan, Aston Martin’s God of fire, continued the trend. Now there is Valkyrie. In Norse mythology, Valkyries were the female figures that choose who lived and died on the battlefield. They then bring their chosen slain to Valhalla, the hall of the afterlife, overseen by Odin. Very powerful imagery, exactly what AM was going for. It’s very theatrical and adds a sense of occasion to the car. The Aston Martin Valkyrie will be delivered to customers in 2018.
