k24/18g reliability, longevity etc.

I assume many people have been running this setup for awhile now. Just curious, how many miles you have on such a setup ?, and what type of issues have you experienced ?

I searched by was unable to find anything. Really curious what are the longevity expectations for such modifications ? Assuming you have a good installer, proper tune, with semi aggressive street driving ONLY etc.

I know this is a loaded question, but was curious, since this setup seems to be one of the more popular options, not too aggressive etc. Can one expect to put 20-30k or more on such a setup, without having to to rebuild the engine if maintained properly ? Or is it still too early to assess any trends ?

Feedback is appreciated.

I'm not sure if its the same set up but I have a GT700 kit with Y-pipe, Throttle body, gt40 headers, and intercoolers. I installed my kit at 9000 miles and now have 19,000 miles. I have not had one problem with my car other than replacing the clutch. The car runs like a clock and I drive like a maniac. I push my car to the limit at all times. Drag racing, road racing at the Poconos and Watkins and basically blasting up to 185 on the highway regularly. I just recently replaced my plugs and did a smoke test along with a leakdown test of the cyclinders and the results were great. Other than changing my plugs, fluids (mobil 1), and general services I do nothing else. I can't tell you anything more, but I believe my bottom end will last another 10,000 miles. Although I probably will not find out because the plan is to step up to 900HP. Good luck!

With attention to good fuel/boost levels/and fuel system, the K24/18's are a very inexpensive, simple set-up. It appears now that there are even better turbos out.
Amazing what you will find as far as performance results with the K24/18g set up though.

As long as you use the recommended oil i don't see why they wont last forever..

You wont over spin them to blow them so the only issue would be lubrication.

GT700 kit uses a Garrett GT-28 based turbo in K-16 housing or in a Tial housing depending on when it was purchased. Great kit though!! I suspect your bottom end will last longer than another 10K at this power level.

Jonas,

I've had the K24/18G with fuel for 3 years and 30,000+ miles. They run perfectly and feel like they will go forever. They still feel and run like brand new - there is nothing wrong with them. Whan I do exhaust swaps, I look at them and give them a spin...they are still the same as when they were installed.

I would not worry about it. My engine turned 100,000 miles last week. I red line the car every time I drive it, which is daily. If your only reason to hold back is reliability questions, I don't feel that is an issue.

These engines are by far the most reliable to modifications...k24/18g turbos push them but not over their stock internal limits...if you go there...just put injectors and boost controller so to run it "off" every day,low boost to race fast cars and high boost to race very very fast cars and other modified 99XTT...my car had 55000km when turbos installed and now it has 71000km...No troubles at all...(only some blown mafs)i change oil every 6000km and use only Mobil 1 0/40...oil consumption betweeb changes is about 1 liter...i enjoy my car at 0,8bar every day...it runs awesome...and when a race occured...boost was set to high...

30,000 miles on the basic Proto setup i.e. no injectors or air.... 1.1 on 93 1.3 on 100. Not a hint of a problem. I drive it every day.

Not an easy question to answer as it's entirely dependant on what supporting mods are used on each kit. I believe the 24/18 setups will have slightly more power for equivalent supporting mods. That being said the gt700 kit has a generous set of supporting mods and will outperform most basic 24/18g setups which include only software, turbos, and exhaust, IMO.
