I have a leak
Just pulled into the garage and after 20 minutes there was a small pool under the rear driver's side exhaust tip. Its coming from above and dripping onto it but I can't see from where. The fluid is a very light pink almost like a very light colored transmission fluid. It is slick like oil. What is this coming from? Engine is too hot to go searching with my hand. Seems to have slowed down. It is a manual trans.

Ok, so I got the air pump out and took a picture. Looks like the leak is probably coming from the tank. The tank is a bit low so I think that's it. I can seem to see the leak anywhere in the tank. Can I run the car with the air pump not installed? I feel like I'd be able to see the leak if I can run it with the pump not installed.

A few thoughts:
1. Replace the coolant reservoir cap if it is not the latest version, part number 99610644704, about $20. Earlier versions (part numbers ending in 01, 02 or 03) are known to be leak/failure prone.
2. Check all of the hoses in/out of the reservoir for cracks.
3. Since you have a Gen1 996 you can replace the reservoir quite easily (the Gen2's are harder). Join renntech.org and you can find detailed instructions on how to do this work. Suncoast Porsche (in FLA) has Gen1 reservoirs shown on their site for around $310.
As for driving the car without the air injection pump...the pump is needed only on startup (runs for the first couple of minutes, until the cats heat up). Having said that, it is an integral part of the emissions system and your dash will likely light up with a CEL if the pump is not there. Since you now have practice removing the air pump, is taking a drive and then removing the pump immediately upon parking the car an option?
Good luck.
