Production Koenigsegg Regera Challenges Bugatti Chiron to a Duel

You! Hey, you! Yeah, Mr. Bugatti Chiron. Step off that podium, it’s not yours just yet. You have a friendly competitor named the Koenigsegg Regera, and it’s no slouch with more than 1,500 horsepower (the official specs still haven’t been released , aside from a wet curb weight of 3,505 pounds.)

The final production version might look quite similar to the concept vehicle that was unveiled last year, but according to Koenigsegg, it has more than 3,000 changes. If you remember, the biggest deal about the Regera is that it gets all this power to the ground not through a traditional transmission, but rather through a patented new technology called “Direct Drive.” In the company’s words:

“Koenigsegg has developed a clutch-slip mechanism that uses the hydraulic coupling to convert torque at medium/high speeds during fast acceleration. This allows the combustion engine to gain revs and power, thereby giving the sensation of a traditional downshift with the associated aural enjoyment, even without the traditional gearbox.

“Shift paddles remain on either side of the steering wheel. The left paddle is used to enhance the regenerative braking effect in recharging the battery pack. The right paddle is used to activate the hydraulic coupling’s ‘downshift’ operation.”

Now, while the Bugatti, which is about 1,000 pounds heavier than the Regera, uses four turbos and, like, 700 catalytic converters, the Regera incorporates electric power to help provide the smoothest possible power. It has an 800-volt, 4.5kWh battery pack, which gives 525kw of discharge.

Naturally, pretty much everything (wheels, brakes, engine, drivetrain, etc) was built and designed by Koenigsegg, because nobody else is good enough to do what Christian wants. Well, except the Apple CarPlay, which comes standard.

LET THE GAMES BEGIN!
