718 Cayman GTS May Be Porsche’s Best Kept Secret

By -

Road and Track takes 2018 Porsche Cayman GTS out to Lime Rock Park race track and comes to a very interesting conclusion.

Sometimes the fact that Porsches are fun cars to drive gets lost in the noise of automotive journalists that want to be race car drivers. Porsche also does give good headlines by dropping powerful and precise track monsters on the market, and it’s easy to get the impression these days that everyone wants a race car for the road from their Porsche. This could be why the Cayman GTS doesn’t get the love and press it deserves. But it should, because few other models from the marque can have the phrase “value for money” connected to them, like the Cayman GTS does.

In this video from the Road and Track YouTube channel, they take us through the reasons why the 2018 Cayman GTS is great value for the money, from the perspective of someone that wants a fun high-performance car that also brings a large dose of everyday driving comfort.

GTS spec definitely puts Cayman perfectly into that middle ground between whip-sharp track tool and sporty but comfortable everyday driver. The PASM adaptive suspension, the Sport Chrono package, Sports Exhaust System, Porsche’s Torque Vectoring system, and Alcantara upholstered bucket seats are all part of the package. So the adaptive suspension keeps things comfy, but the sound from those pipes definitely ups the ante.

Driven by a turbocharged flat-four engine, the Cayman GTS is good for 365 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque. With an asking price of $80,850 for one of Porsche’s best mid-engined road car chassis yet, it’s hard to not describe it as good value for money.

However, that heavily boosted four-cylinder is the sticking point for the 2018 and, no doubt, models going forward. The engine is a different beast, and for a car that is so quintessentially Porsche everywhere else in the build, it could be a tough pill to swallow if you’ve owned or driven a previous flat-six version. However, a Porsche is always the sum of its parts and, certainly in this case, it would be silly to deny the Cayman GTS is anything but a truly great car.
