Audi's 2013 R8 Gets a Facelift

Finally! Seven years after it’s arrival, Audi’s R8 is finally getting a much deserved refresh. While it’s been updated with additional models and features, it’s yet to be given a proper “facelift” that we typically see before they get started on an all new model.

Topping the R8 range is the new “V10 plus”. The biggest changes in this model is a completely new 7-speed S-tronic transmission. Unlike the much maligned, semi-auto R-tronic gear box, the new tranny has two multi-plate clutches that serve independent sub-transmissions. We’re not sure how that works exactly, but they’re promising instantaneous shifts with little to no interruption in power delivery. Thankfully though, Audi hasn’t taken the classic 6-speed manual transmission option off the table. The revised transmission takes care of the biggest complaint people had with the R8, but it’s not the only change.

The 2013 R8 is also an all LED lit machine. LED high and low beams, running lights, turn signals and tails are now standard. If you want, they’ll even have LEDs illuminating the engine compartment. The other exterior changes to the R8 are fairly minor. Circular tailpipes are standard on all engine models, the rear diffuser is now higher up.  A revised headlight assembly and a slightly differently shaped grill are the only cues you’ll get that the 2013 R8 is different from the rest.

The new R8 will go into production in Europe by the end of the year. They haven’t said anything about a US model in the press release, but we can be sure to get ours shortly after.
