‘Bad Boys’ Porsche 964 Turbo Enjoys Retirement From the Force
Believe it or not, the owner of the iconic movie car is a member here at 6 Speed Online.
Ask any car enthusiast what sparked their interest, and many will tell you it was seeing a particular car in a particular movie. Maybe it was the Trans Am in Smokey and the Bandit. Maybe it was the ’68 Mustang in Bullitt. For a generation of young Porsche fans, it was the black 964 Turbo in the Will Smith/Martin Lawrence action-comedy Bad Boys.
As a forum, 6 Speed Online has been around for quite some time. Some threads have stuck around and remained active for over a decade. One of those threads is maintained by the owner of the actual “Bad Boys” movie car. Appropriately enough, his screen name — and the car’s personalized plate — both read “Bad Boys 1.”
Believe it or not, this Porsche was originally owned by director Michael Bay. According to an interview with Car & Driver, the film’s production budget couldn’t stretch enough to source the hero car, so he bought his own and used it on screen.
After that, Bad Boys 1 owned the car before selling it in September of 2008 to the Drendel collection. Matt Drendel was a well-respected — and well-loved — member of the Porsche community until his untimely passing in November of 2010 at the age of 35. Gone too soon, he’s remembered fondly by nearly everyone he met.
Bad Boys for Life
Shortly after his passing, the iconic movie car returned to Bad Boys 1’s stable. Over the years, he’s shared tons of photos of the car. It’s been on many off-screen adventures since retiring from the Miami Police Department.
Given its importance to so many, you’d be forgiven if you thought that this car spent its whole life holed up in a climate-controlled storage space. You’d be wrong, though, as this car is regularly used, driven, and enjoyed.
It’s hardly a daily driver, of course. It receives the sort of care and attention that a movie star deserves, and it gets to reconnect with its adoring public quite frequently at shows.
Bad Boys 1 regularly posts in the thread — going on 12 years old now — with photos and updates. The most recent update came in January of this year. When Bad Boys For Life was released, the black 964 Turbo was at the premiere. As one of the big stars of the original movie, it definitely deserved the red carpet treatment.
