Brand New McLaren 720S Has Some Serious Quality Issues

It’s one thing to expect some quality issues from a cheap car, but this 43 mile McLaren 720S has some bizarre faults.

Panel gaps, corrosion, loose parts. These things almost don’t even make sense on a current production car. But that’s what YouTuber Jamie’s Garage has discovered. And of all cars to discover these issues, they are on a 43 mile McLaren 720S. Now, corrosion around some bolts isn’t much of a big deal, but loose bolts bring some serious doubt as to whether the rest of the car is actually screwed together properly.

Jamie Caldwell has discovered the rest of the car is surprisingly iffy, too. So the engine bay is out of sight, out of mind, right? What about the outside of the car, like the doors? If you open them all the way – as you normally would to do things like, get in and out – then the door hits the fender as seen below. When you try and close them, they pull on the door seals.

While there may be some jokes to be had at the expense of hand-built British cars, we should remember that McLaren also does pump out some of the most exquisitely built hypercars in the world. We also have to remember that because the cars are hand assembled, they don’t have the luxury of super automation like big car companies have. Toyota and Ford can account for supply chain issues. McLaren is such a low volume producer that if their limited stock is depleted, it impacts a significantly higher percentage of output. So maybe those screws were sources from someone other than their usual vendor.

But this isn’t the first time McLaren’s have been affected by poor quality. Road and Track has reported that the Artura press launch was filled with blunders. Software glitches were one issue, but at one point an Artura caught fire on a test track. AutoExpress wrote that the magazines’ long-term 570GT test car had a constant barrage of unexplainable warning lights. It also couldn’t detect the key was in the car, and the windows would randomly open on their own. Frustrating from any car. Especially frustrating on a car with a 6-digit price tag.
