High-end cars face impound for a week with seven-day license suspensions to match

Canadian police have impounded at least a dozen high-end exotic, luxury, and sports cars following a spate of alleged “stunt driving” on Highway 400 near Barrie, Ontario, according to a report by Ontario’s CityNews.ca. Ontario Provincial Police rounded up the cars on the highway by slowing traffic to a crawl and then pulling the performance cars over one-by-one onto an off-ramp.

Sergeant Kerry Schmidt of the OPP said the drivers in the group were weaving through traffic at high speed and driving “erratically.” Schmidt told Toronto news station CP24 that the cars were reported traveling at more than 150 kilometers per hour (~93 miles per hour) and that the charges of “stunt driving” could also include following too closely, cutting off other drivers, and making illegal lane changes. While the OPP let some drivers off with warnings, they also charged 12 drivers, resulting in a seven-day impound of the cars to accompany a seven-day suspension of their driver’s licenses. The impounds and suspensions were applied in lieu of arrests, although Schmidt said there would likely be fines imposed at a June court date.

Amedeo DiCarlo, an attorney for the group, told CP24 that the claims were exaggerated and that the police barricaded the group with SUVs. “I think what had happened is that some witnesses had called in about cars driving fast,” DiCarlo said. “I mean if you’re driving on the 400 doing 80 kilometres an hour and somebody passes by doing 110 and you see it’s a Lamborghini or Ferrari, right away ‘oh that guy’s speeding’ and you know they claim those as witnesses.”

Among the cars confiscated was a Lamborghini Huracan painted with a Royal Canadian Air Force emblem and vinyl on the driver’s door window that reads “let me guess, license and registration?” The other cars involved included a BMW 1M, a Porsche 911, a C7 Corvette, and an assortment of other luxury and performance cars. The CityNews and OPP report that the additional cars include a Ferrari, an Aston Martin, and Mercedes.
