Head of Porsche GT cars, Andreas Preuninger, weighs in on the new Cayman 718 GT4 at Goodwood Festival of Speed 2019.

The new high-performance 718 GT4 Cayman got us pretty excited the first time we heard about its release. We have been learning more and more about the car on a daily basis as new information comes in. You can read more about some general information surrounding the car in our previous article.

At this year’s legendary Goodwood Festival Of Speed 2019, Porsche featured a booth for the new GT4. The Carfection YouTube channel gives us the opportunity to see what was going on at that booth and get a walk around of the car with Porsche’s head of GT cars, Andreas Preuninger. Sadly we weren’t able to attend the booth ourselves due to prior engagements, so this is the best we can do. Let’s get into some more details about the car.

Preuninger begins by stating that although this engine has been sourced from a 3.0L Carrera Turbo 992 911, it is bespoke in many ways. It features a unique crankcase, pistons, rods, crankshaft, head, and valves. So long story short, it is a completely new engine for the new GT4. This engine is now 4.0L and has the same bore and stroke at the GT3 race engine. The engine also now features 420 HP, a 35 HP increase from the previous model.

Andreas heavily emphasizes that the new GT4 is about driving first and driving last. Its a car that you won’t be scared to take up to 100% and it will reward you to do so. The idea is that is not some unapproachable supercar that will get you arrested the minute you accelerate more than a second, but rather a car that can be really pushed to fully immerse the driver’s enjoyment and experience.

The gearbox from the previous generation car will also be shared with this new model, with Andreas stating that the gearbox fits the “driver’s car” feeling that many seek from a manual gearbox very well. Andreas states that the GT4 will not be available with a PDK until a couple years down the road, so if you want a new GT4, it has been to manual (cheers to Porsche for that one).
