Remember your Hot Wheels and Matchbox collection when you were a kid? How many cars did you have in your 1/64th-scale garage? Sixty, 70, 220? As a child, did you ever imagine what it would be like if all those cars suddenly went life-size on you? That’s basically what automotive museums are, and if you’re a Honda/Acura fan, the Honda Museum in Torrance, CA is heaven on Earth.

I recently got to tour the Honda Museum as part of the DriveLA series of events leading up to the reopening of the remodeled Petersen Automotive Museum. I could see why the Petersen included a tour of the Honda museum in their DriveLA promotion. Take a few steps into Honda’s facility, and you are overcome with museum fever. There’s something special about automotive collections that house one particular automaker or type of car.

Here’s something else that strikes you when you encounter the Honda Museum. Compare the first Honda sold in the United States, the N-600 from 1969, to what Honda (Acura) introduced at the Chicago Auto Show 20 years later: the NSX. It’s sort of poetic that Honda introduced a quick car to mark their quick ascent in the U.S. auto market.

Cycle through Honda’s illustrious American automotive past in the gallery below.
