Dubai’s roads might look ripe for speed. But they’re also a great way to accumulate $45k in fines in just three hours.

For most of us, there’s nothing better than exploring the roads of another country behind the wheel of a rented supercar. Especially when you’re talking about the long, straight, flat roads of Dubai. And according to The Sun, that’s exactly what 25 year-old British man Farah Hashi did on his recent desert vacation in a shiny new Lamborghini Huracan. But there’s just one tiny problem, of course. Dubai is lined with as many speed cameras as it is supercars.

Thus, it took the joyriding Hashi a mere 3 hours to rack up an incredible 33 speeding tickets, at one point topping out at 150 mph. Which is one of the faster ways to blow $45,000 aside from a drug-fueled trip to the gentleman’s club (just ask Charlie Sheen). But there is a big twist to this story, however. In Dubai, speeding tickets acquired while driving a rental car are, incredibly, the responsibility of the rental car company. Not the guy who “earned them.”

Thus, a good old fashioned standoff is currently taking place. The rental company has Hashi’s passport, so he can’t leave the country. The Lamborghini Huracan is apparently still in his possession, parked at a hotel. Apparently, if the rental company retakes possession of it before the fines are paid, the government will seize the supercar. Meanwhile, the two parties continue to fight over who, in fact, will pay that insane stack of tickets.

In the meantime, the government appears to be staying out of this mess. They denied the rental company’s request for a travel ban, and they also haven’t stepped in to force him to pay the fines. A family friend painted a picture of innocence by ignorance to The Sun, telling them that “he didn’t know the laws over there.” Hate to break it to you buddy, but we’ve used that one before, and it never works!
