Porsche 911s Bask in the Surreal Sun of Artist Chris Labrooy
Drawn to its soft shape and eccentric personality, digital artist Chris Labrooy places the Porsche 911 in sunny scenes of trippy happiness.
Though greatly changed since its debut in the Sixties, the Porsche 911 still retains its classic fastback silhouette to this day. Whether it’s a ’73 Carrera RS or a ’20 Turbo S, when a 911 goes by, everyone knows it’s a Porsche. Very few vehicles stand out the way the 911 does, let alone influence the styling of the rest of its siblings.
It’s this shape and style which influenced digital artist Chris Labrooy of Scotland. Porsche’s 9:11 Magazine recently sat down with Labrooy to talk about his art, all starring the 911 in some unusual, yet happy, scenery.
“It’s a very soft, rounded shape that’s a highly capable, high performance sports car at the same time,” Labrooy said. “The 911 has a unique, almost eccentric personality. When I’m making my images, the cars are like actors in a way, and the 911 is like an A-list Hollywood star, with all this depth and versatility.”
And like a classic A-lister, Labrooy’s 911s are usually seen poolside. Whether in an inflatable pink flamingo or chilling in the pool, symbols of happiness surround the iconic Porsche. The surreal results drew in the likes of Apple, British Airways and Nike, according to CarScoops, who’ve tapped Labrooy for their ad campaigns. However, he always returns to the 911 as his muse.
“I’ve owned four different Porsches,” said Labrooy. “The current car I have now is a Cayman 718 GTS […] It wasn’t until I owned a Porsche that the brand actually started to get under my skin a little bit. As I got older and started to be in a position to buy my own sports car, it was a Porsche I chose.”
The Porsche 911 fits in well with Labrooy’s mid-century, So-Cal backdrops. He says “it’s almost like going back in time,” that “California and the 911 is a perfect combination.”
“In the end, I like a ridiculous idea that is really well-crafted,” said Labrooy.
The combination of a classic 911 bouncing around in a pool inflatable in a mid-century home in the Mojave definitely fits Labrooy’s statement, one we’re all the better for experiencing.
