1984 Carrera 3.2 litre Performance Question?
I just purchased a 1984 Carrera Cabrio with a lot of work done to the car. It has a full Strosek Style Body Kit, Lowered, New Interior and Gauges, etc...
I don't have engine records on the car, but the engine has a cam and some other mods, but I don't know specs, etc.. It is supposed to have the work done, but again I don't have records.
If I hammer the car in 1st from around 10 mph it breaks loose sideways and I have New 295 30 ZR19 tires on the back. It breaks loose slightly going into second and pulls extremely hard.
Is this normal performance from the engine? If so, I'm impressed.
Thanks in advance.

I would say it definitely has "work" done to the engine...my lightly modified 3.2 does not break the rears loose with my 265s on the rear...I would have it put on a dyno to see what HP it's pushing...keep us posted if you find out...I can't imagine someone creating all that "show" and no "go"....looks sweet!
Post more pics!

Thanks Jak...I'll post some more pics of the car as soon as possible. It goes to the speed shop next week to help determine what has been done, hp, etc...
I'll keep you posted.

Hi Chris,
That car used to be mine. ;o) I sold it a little over a year ago to a gentleman in Miami area. I bought it as a stock euro cabriolet from the original owner who imported it to the US in '84/'85 (an 85 year old doctor. No fooling). If you look at your door jamb you'll see his name as the "importer" ... his name was Morris Leaventhall. It was a super clean car to start with... just funky color combo. It did run hard... & sound great doing it. I think it may be because it came directly from Germany... which I think had higher HP cars. We put all the parts on the car and built it to what it is. I think the owner after me also did some work. Obviously he replaced the rims.
Like my avatar? ;o)

Wow...thank you for the reply. You did an incredible job on the car... the body work looks great and you obviously took care of it. I purchased the car in an auction in Florida and shipped it to Texas. It is at a very good Porsche Mech now. They mentioned that it def. has an extra 20 plus hp as a Euro car. It was possible some additional tweaking was done as well. It pulls very nice and sounds good. You obviously took care of the motor which is good to know. The mech is doing a leak down test, valve adjustment, and all the other tune up goodies... then determining horse power. I do like your avatar... lol
Can I order a couple of new matching rims from you in the very near future? I think you stock what I have. It's the turbo three piece 19 x 10 with the lip. I may also need to order a tach is you can supply?
Thanks again.

Thank you... I must say, this car handles extremely well and is a lot of fun to drive. I've attached a pic... the quality is camara phone. However, the only evidence we have on motor work is some mapping. We don't have HP numbers, but it runs extremely strong for a stock Euro 3.2. I moved forward with a lot of top end gasket replacement and other work to get the car in top shape. The leak down numbers are perfect. The bottom looks extremely clean, with no leaks etc... Can't imagine it hasn't been opened at some point.
A stock 3.2 won't break the rear wheel loose as you described....so you must have some engine mods.....I'm running my 3.2 with over 320HP and I have to rev the engine to 3K to get the wheels to break loose, even in winter when the pavement is cold. I have 245x16's on the rear and they grip like crazy. What is your red line? If you are topping out at 6K then perhaps you need to get a dino to confirm your HP. The cabrio is a heavier car than the coupe and as such needs more HP to do as you describe. Do you have headers or a modified intake manifold, or any special work done to the valves or heads? Do you know what the compression is? Is it Euro or standard US spec?. I know, a lot of questions but you will be a happy person when you find the answers to these question...your car looks great, somebody did a lot of work to make it look as good as it does!!! Pipes
3.2s don't break rear tire traction in a straight line at 10 mph unless your tires are old, or you are turning such as at a curve or intersection, even a Euro spec motor. Chirping shifting into second - that can happen. Perhaps the former owner installed a 7:31 r/p and/or rebuilt the motor with larger p/cs. Even motors rebuilt with larger displacement don't break traction that easily. If a car is weigh jacked, that can also cause one side to break traction. The only 911 I ever drove that broke traction easily was a '72 with a modified and custom chipped 911 with a '95 993 motor and early 915 tranny. That car was brutal scary.
Maybe you can post more pics of your motor like, like the underside with the exhaust?

I think the tires breaking loose is a hard tire situation. However, the car does pull very nice. I had in to Jones and it looks to be a Euro Spec Motor with some mapping possible. I don't have Dyno numbers and not sure if it has cam work to go with the mapping. I moved forward and had the top end redone. Injectors, gaskets, New Air Meter... then set up and the numbers look good. Leak down is perfect. The compression is 10:3:1 and the exhaust is stock minus the Cat.
I do want to chip it and go with a new exhaust package for a while. In the long run, I am trying to decide on what the next step is actually. May go the Big Bore route, or I may go with a Protomotive Turbo Motor. Just don't know.
Thanks for the compliment on the car guys...it doesn't have a scratch on it and very well done.

I may be wrong...been there before, but it sounds like you have a stock Euro motor. If you had racing cams, you would know it, they lobe all the time, especially when idiling. My engine is a bear to keep idiling in the summer months when the temperatures are hot outside. I have an oversized throttle body that does not have an idle adjustment. I add an additive to increase the octane to help overcome this problem in the summer months. When you start a 911 with racing cams and standard injectors, the engine runs very rough until the injectors catch up with the cams. The addition of stainless headers and reworked heads makes this even more prevelant. The 10.3 compression is standard Euro, but I reworked my engine to upgrade from standard US spec to the Euro compression. I also have a special chip that was made when I originally rebuilt the engine, but I need a new chip that allows more fuel, especially after I opened up the exhaust with the SS headers and exhaust system. You can get a lot of enjoyment out of the 3.2 because the older cars are lighter and very responsive.....Pipes
chris your car has had to have some work done to it.
I mean check out my NEw memember thread and see pic of my engine it looks completely brand new.
Now check this out. I recently talked to roy at MotorMeister which is the largest porsche engine rebuilder and performance guys.
I saw the same pic of my engine on there website which has to been the engine was rebuilt or def sent to them fro soem engine modifications
.
must be the same case for you call them and give them you vin# theyll let you know if they had work done there.
