Battery maintenance
I have a 1971 911E. What is the best way to keep the batteries maintained while leaving them in the car. Currently I put a trickle charger on the driver side battery and connect jumper cables to the Rt side battery. My charger has quit so I need to buy a new one. My question: How strong of a trickle charger do I need and am I hooking it up correctly?

I had mine on a trickle charger and after about a month or so when I switched the car on, Boom, the battery exploded and white smoke poured from the trunk. I had the trunk cracked and the light unplugged so that might have help when the battery blew. .Knew what happened and grabbed my fire extinguisher, some rags and baking soda from the garage fridge. But when I opened the trunk and the smoke cleared the explosion seemed confined by the carpet over the battery and no acid was sprayed in the trunk. Went out and bought a new battery and hooked it up and all was fine. I am no longer going to put any of my cars a charger and just start them out ever week or so.
