Help with purchasing a 930

Hi all, I have always been a big 930 fan but previously wasn't in a position to buy/maintain one. Once that changed I hadn't seen any decent ones (near me) for sale.

I found a 1978 car locally for sale with ~60k original miles and it looks cosmetically very nice.

What I'd like to know are what are the issues with that car in that generation? What should I look out for? Who would do an inspection on a car that age? What is a rough price range? I don't expect a great deal but I don't want to get smoked either.

Since I plan on driving it very little a really cool 930 would be something. The only neg is I'm not a fan of the copper metallic brown color, but hey you can't get everything.

Thanks.

There are many many issues with these cars. The obvious ones are leaks from the engine or tranny. Bodywork, interior problems for a car that old are concerns as well. I bought my car and had a PPI done by a reputable shop and personally, was worthless. Same for my 996TT. I think you gotta inspect the car yourself, make sure it is cold when you get there and start it up yourself and drive it. Look for obvious issues. A PPI is ok for uncovering big isues but the little ones that will creep up are much harder to ascertain.

a pip by a wrench who 930s is the best thing you can do, maintenance history will help you...nothing is cheap on these cars...basic maintenance yearly if you are paying to have the work done is a couple thousand assuming there is nothing big going on...and yes the little things add up, but there is nothing like a 930!

Good idea. I'm going to find someone who knows the cars locally to make sure I have a resource to inspect, fix and service. I know they are not cheap to maintain, but which really cool exotic is? I'm hopeful it six slightly less money out of my wallet than my boat.

930 inspection

I am curious, what makes a 930 that much more expensive to maintain than a normally aspirated 911 of same year? Thanks, Gary

It all depends on the car, but obviously if you need a new turbo then you could shell out $1000 for one for a 930, while a NA 911 wouldn't ever need one. These cars effectively have higher compression when boosting so if there's a weak part in the motor my guess is it would prolly be more likely to give way under boost then in a NA motor. Also, there's a slippery slop that many 930 owners run into for mods. Once on it you could drop many bucks with performance improvements, motor, turbo, intercooler, EFI, suspension, etc...been there and done that

Good luck & enjoy the ride!
