964 Turbo Heavy Clutch
964 Turbo Heavy Clutch
Hello 6speeders,
Here's my introductory post to this forum. I have just bought a 92 964 Turbo, as an addition to my 78 911SC widebody and 58 VW split window bus.
I'm looking forward to playing with the Turbo, but have a few things to sort out to get it reliable. I feel that the hydraulic clutch is very heavy (compared to my SC). Is this typical? What should I look at to rectify the problem? Do I need to replace the clutch?
This car has 111k mi on the clock, and no history of a previous clutch job that I could find.
It also has a airbag warning light on. Do I need a special scan tool to reset the code, or will any OBD tool work? The reverse lights don't turn on ... where should I look first?
So many questions, much enthusiasm, little wisdom. Please help.
Ben

I had a heavy clutch and it turned out to be the disk was shot. I've heard that it could be as simple as a bad slave cylinder. My clutch now has super smooth action.

Word on the Pelican forums is that the 993TT clutch slave has a power assist off the power steering pump. My car still isn't in Canada yet so I can't check to see if our 964T has that same setup. Can anyone give me some info?
Hi Benzyne,
NO your car does not have the same set up as the 993TT (would be nice), but you have the strongest trans. porsche put into a street car, a G50/52. If your pedal is harder than a SC, most likely a seizing up throwout bearing fork cross shaft, could be the clutch though if orig. (doubtfull at that mileage), seizing shaft problem is VERY common on these gearboxes. I hope by 92 964 turbo you mean a 965(not a converted(964 to turbo), because then there could be other issues.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info Bernie930. Here are pics of the bus as requested. It has undergone a bare metal restore. Has been sealed with epoxy and is currently at the paint shop to received the final spray of white over dove blue. She has disc brakes up front, a 2.0L 914 engine for the rear mated to a IRS bug transmission and IRS axle conversion.

BTW, I have a 965 not a 964 converted to a Turbo. There are still some who think the 965 designation was still born.
