991 Turbo.... I Fear It May Be.... Boring?
Am I crazy ( Maybe ).... I actually enjoy driving my C4S more, and I have not even put the top down on it yet. Maybe as the season opens up, and I have the ability to drive it more, I will fall in love?? But as it sits, I think I'd rather have something else.
Does anyone else have similar feelings? Again, not slamming the car. Its a great machine. But it just seems to lack that soul...

I've not driven a 991TT yet. I'm certain they are fast as a veyron on 14 cylinders - but I get the lacking "soul" bit. A good friend of mine designed the Nissan GTR and told me ages ago that Nissan used the 996/7 Turbos as benchmarks for the GTR so much that they joked that Porsche would have to use the GTR for the NEXT 991 development.
It was probably 7 years ago and I never thought that I would believe it, but I do now. I can't believe the GT3 has 4 wheel steering...really? But back to the turbo - yes it has a ton of technology that help you go faster, great - but I agree the passion is missing.
I recently got a 14 Maserati GT Sport Conv. Yeah, its WAY slower than my 600hp 996tt, but it's got so much character and presence than my old hat 911. Oh yeah, and that sound. The car is actually most entertaining while puttering around playing the exhaust tone like a trumpet with your right foot.
Yeah...maybe its the sound? Its not simply about a LOUD sound. Thats sux, its gotta me mellifluous. But then thats not that fast is it???

I feel that way is why I most likely won't go Porsche turbo for 2014. They got this sports car set up now for play-station flipper mentality. Got it set up for those who can't or refuse to develop hand to brain coordination necessary to operate a manual box. My wife, teen son/daughter and their grandfather and grandmother fit into that category. I think if forced to go auto-box, maybe best to get a more GT-touring styled coupe like an Aston Martin, M6 for examples. An auto-box in a true-looking sports car like the 911 turbo just doesn't make much sense. Sports cars are fun cars and where is fun to finger-flip and go

Good argument for auto-pdk, especially if just 0-60 extremely important for street use. Sounds like you have a '14 pdk. Question, I can't clear answer for: If in sport mode manual-like 1st-gear and rev-limiter is hit, will pdk-box shift to second automatically or does driver need to flip paddle to regain control of car?

I haven't really had the opportunity to test mine...but pretty sure it does just bounce off the red limiter. Wont shift itself.
A few weeks in, i am very happy. It feels like i am driving an incredibly powerful, well balanced, well constructed street rocket. Can handle anything I can responsibly throw at it....without drama. Fact that it will also be bullet proof reliability wise is another great attribute.
For those that are looking for more "excitement" and no "flappy paddles" I am just not quite sure what cars we are talking about?

If it is anything like the panamera, if turbo hits the rev-limiter with pdk-1st gear, car just hesitates and putting it into second doesn't work even close to that of a manual box where you shift instantly into 2nd and off you go. I guess this means with Pdk, for safety, best to stay into auto mode, at least for 1st and 2nd gears. Would take some practice to hit 2nd with paddle w/o hitting rev-limiter under hard acceleration

I'm going to revive this topic, as I have a dilemma at the moment to swap out the TTS cab for a huracan. There is a whole thread on that as well.
Coming from a 991 C2 Cab, the TTS Cab feels much more luxurious and more 'mature'. However I felt like I was in a sports car when I was in the c2, the steering felt lighter and sharper, the sound of PSE was amazing top down or up. Pedal modulation was more controllable. I even felt the BOSE sounded better than the Burmester for HD radio and MP3 sources! ( I know the burmester needs higher quality sources and I probably need to tune down the bass/treb)
Now in the TTS, it felt like I was in a luxury sports sedan, very solid, sporty and a little bit heavy on its feet. It is ridiculously fast and pulls hard, but surprisingly I don't get the level of adrenaline like I think I should. I get more thrills sitting in my friend Mas GT convertible which is significantly slower but sounds amazing when pushed hard.
I think it's because the TTS does everything too well and perfect, sometimes a little bit of drama is what we look for in life.

If you are looking for some drama in a high end sports car, you might also want to consider looking backward towards some cars prior to all the Big Brother technologies added to the car. The most squirrly car I have ever owned was a 2003 and two 2005 Vipers. It could get away from you in a heartbeat, with the most advanced safety technology being ABS. Not trying to steer you towards a Viper or any particular brand, but a car that depends mostly on driver input and corrections is bound to be much more adrenaline producing than one with multiple built in safety technologies.
Anyways, just offering a different perspective to a 2016 model year type. Also, if you do buy a Huracan, expect a lot more attention from other folks. Out of the 15-20 high performance cars I have owned since 1998, the Viper was the most gawks per dollar spent, and I am sure the Huracan would get as many if not a lot more. One thing I really like about the TTS is it is about as stealthy as you can get in an every day supercar. I got a close look at one when I was getting my TTS windows tinted a few weeks ago, and the car is just crazy to see in person.
I know exactly what you mean. The turbo is just not a visceral thrill anymore.
I have to drive my tt 180 mph to remotely get a thrill.
In my mas gt cab, I go 25mph in 4th and floor it....puts a smile on my face every time.
I think that ultimately it's a sound issue...turbo has no sounds. Booty even an mp3 can fix that :-) :-) :-)
It is super fast though. At some point, driving fast on public roads gets boring....and stupid.
