991 Tune Issues / Concerns ... ?

I'm ordering a new car ... TT (non-S), and tho't I'd "tune" it to get the power the S has for far fewer U$Ds. Using the $$ for other bits.

But, I spoke with a vendor today and it seems tuning the 991 Turbo is much more difficult than the 997 Turbo.

I was told that the car would have to be taken to an independent shop, or a 'tuner friendly' Porsche dealer to have the new tune done. Not the hand held tool and computer guided tune done "at home".

I'm not looking for some radical 100+ new ponies added to the car, just an aftermarket exhaust for better flow/sound, and 50-60 hp increase over my present 997 with FVD tune/Cargraphic exhaust sporting close to 560 hp.

What advice can you folks give me??

There is currently only one tuner that can flash your ECU unit. And that is GIAC. Others offer piggy back units which trick the ECU by providing altered sensor data. To maintain all adequate safeties, it's probably best not to trick your ECU into doing something.

To flash your ECU, you will need to pull the ECU and do a bench flash. Currently, I am not aware of any tuner that can provide a flash via the OBD port...yet.

Just an exhaust may do it to the level you want.. there are some tuners here who have results but I am confused by some... the following thread seems the most cogent currently

https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...-s-tuning.html

If you are in CT talk to Tony at EPL about what exhaust options he could install or if you want to come down to NY speak to Tim941NYC who does the best work in NY IMHO

I enquired last week to Level1 & this was their reply:

"To give you some stats on the new tuner box kit we have developed I have listed them below. We are currently testing the Turbo S and adding headers and exhaust. With the box we hope to tune it to an extra 92hp and 70 or more ft lbs of torque. If you have any questions I will be more than happy to answer them"

"Boost power and torque
improved fuel efficiency up to 15%
Easy install without expensive tools
Self-learning auto-calibration
untraceable through stock ECU(no-footprint technology)
German made custom parts
lifetime warranty on parts
Tuning box has multi-map technology- it ensures your maximum performance with a minimum load. Also we can tune 4 to eight data maps which can be stored in memory and can be retrieved with a push of a button. This gives you the optimum performance in every range possible.
The connectors used are factory OEM connectors and water tight
The micro-processor used within the box is is heat resistant along with all the rest of the components"

Just finished tuning a 991 Turbo S - I posted all of the findings on another thread - charts and hard part info - the Level1tec piggyback ECU works awesome by itself and when you add hardware to it it works even better - we load it with specific tuning software and it is adjustable and self calibrating - also it can be bypassed if needed and the system can be removed when you sell the car if you like - be wary of over boosted claims of power and torque - our numbers are at all wheels not a recalibration to get crank numbers - please call me with any questions if you like - alex@maxrpmmotorsports.com 360-340-1581

HotHonda - Level1tec is run by myself and my partner Aaron McEvoy - we have been working with our German partner on these piggy back systems for some time now and they have been giving great and reliable results We will be road testing our test car today with the added Level1tec ECU - the hard parts (exhaust/plenum/bmc filter) had already been installed so the car had time to adapt to these modifications - you can see on the dyno charts of the differences that the software made...

Here is another chart - completely stock and Level1tec Performance Package - Fabspeed headers and x-pipe work awesome and the IPD plenum the same - the headers/exhaust/plenum/filter added about 49 hp @ 4-4500 rpm and about 57 foot ponds of torque - at the wheels....

Can a piggy-back system be easily removed for warranty-related "concerns"? Is a piggy-back system undetectable to PNA?

If they raise torque above factory levels, they're extremely detectable.

So flash or piggy-back, there is no hiding any of these tunes from PNA should they choose to fight on a warranty claim?

We offer a tuning kit that can be installed at home - it is indeed a piggy back style system.

I stand corrected - regardless, I would always favor a properly created ECU solution that maintains engine safety protocols over a piggyback.
