Porsche 991 Turbo Tuned to 630 Horsepower AVAILABLE NOW!!

Porsche 991 Turbo tuning is now available from VR Tuned via our new multi channel tuning box kit. The Porsche 991 Turbo and Turbo S are able to make 630bhp from our new Tuning Box Kit. (edited the obdII statement) Where some tuners are taking matching software ID files and uploading them to the car, this can be dangerous and not allow you to revert back to your true original file. The Tuning Box kit is a simple plug and play solution that allows you to remove the box or plug the jumper back in for stock mode never affecting the ECU identifications itself. Since this is a mult channel tuning box, it works off of boost pressure, manifold pressure, and crankshaft sensor to deliver a very strong increase in horsepower and torque whether in sport or standard mode.

The harness installs in about 1 hour follow the detailed instructions linked below. The 2 pressure sensors are easily accessible from the top of the engine bay and the crankshaft sensor does require the right rear wheel to be removed to gain access behind the compressor inlet pipe. Once clipped in, we connected the tuning box and safely mounted it in-between the air intake snorkels where it would not be as prone to heat or coming loose. The boxes are weather resistance and extremely durable to protect the microprocessor inside.

We tested the Tuning Box Kit on our 2014 Porsche Turbo. The Tuning Boxes were also tested by the manufacture seperately in the UK and Germany. Our test was done on a Mustang all wheel drive dyno using 91 octane. With this setup, we typically see a 20-25% drivetrain loss from the stock crank published horsepower numbers of 520bhp on a Turbo and 560bhp on a Turbo S. 93 octane or 98 ron is preferred for maxium power. We tested the car several times doing 3rd gear pulls with traction control off in both standard and sport mode. Because sport works off the EGT sensors in the turbos, it will produce much higher torque but taper off on the top end if you run it back to back to back as these EGT’s increase. Our car was equipped with stock catalytic converters, a high flow Agency Power muffler, and a set of our Agency Power headers. With the only variable being the tuning box, our baseline numbers were between 436 and 440awhp with torque between 465 and 477 ft/lbs of torque.

With the VR Tuned Tuning Box Kit plugged in, we saw 494 to 499 awhp and 545 to 551 ft/lbs of torque. This gave us average gains of 60whp and 80ft/lbs of torque. To validate these tests we did several tests throughout the day with controlled cooling periods, back to back testing, and using standard and sport mode. Once the dyno tests were completed, we test drove the car on the street which was a very noticeable and drastic difference on the acceleration and pull. As a secondary test, we tried out a 0-60mph with our Performance Box kit. The car is equipped with 21 inch wheels and Pirelli PZero tires running 36psi at all 4 corners as we did our 0-60 with launch control. Slipping through 1st and 2nd gear, the car still did 3.3 seconds compared to the well tested and controlled factory numbers of 3.4 seconds. This was the product that truly transformed the Porsche 991 Turbo into a beast like previous 997 Turbo models. With the addition of our Auto Flash kit, shifting and throttle response can be increased further.

The power increases are nice, but not unexpected for this platform. The motor is essentially a carry over from the 997.... As for the times you are getting at 3.3 seconds that's not very impressive at all. Comparing this to the published 3.4 times of Porsche is not a good baseline as the car out of the box is getting sub 3.0 second 0-60 runs all day long through launch control. "Slipping though 1st and 2nd" doesn't sell me on the fact that power has made the car any faster, if anything it makes me question if your tune and interfered with the factory launch control. What are you getting for 1/4 mile trap speeds? What is the 60-130 increase?

"The Siemens SDI9 ECU in the cars cannot be read out because of tuning encryption, so conventional OBDII or bench flash tuning is not possible"

You sure you want to stick with that story? Although it is quite true that the ECU uses very heavy RSA encryption, Im pretty sure Ive seen a different vendor doing both bench and OBD flashing successfully on this platform.

Your reported gains seem to be in line with most of the other piggy back systems which are modest. Looks to be a nicely put together kit as long as the price is appropriate.

Per tommyboy's reply, the OP's post raises more questions for me than it answers. Why mess with the tuning for slower than stock 0-60 times, and by extension the practical range of speeds/acceleration on a typical track? Also, what does a significant torque/hp increase do to the car's various sensing systems, including those in LC mode? What is the tradeoff of immediate power gains to long-term reliability and durability? How much torque can the drive train handle before limp mode kicks in?

The Siemens ECU IS capable of being OBDII flashed. In fact, it has been done by another tuner (who I won't mention out of respect to your thread) for quite some time. Both OBDII port flashing AND bench flashing are possible and have been for quite some time now.

My intention was to understand if they actually have a product that competes with GIAC "the other tuner" and is as good or better. The other questions Andrew and I have are valid. Seems to be more questions than answers.

I was also immediately skeptical when they said the ECU couldn't be read or flashed. It seems pretty obvious that it is not only possible but is actually being done!

if you put a plug and play unit in a Porsche 991 turbo, you should probably have your car repossessed.

Vivid racing is basically taking you(us) for a complete moron.
Props to to vivid for having the ***** to so blatantly insult the intelligence of forum members. wish i had your sized *****.

Tom....If you can't get an answer to the simple questions asked imagine what the post sale follow up would be should you have any problems.

Good Morning Gentleman!

Apologies for the delayed reply. Friday was an extremely hectic day, and we are out of the office Saturday and Sunday. I have returned this morning to see your posts. Regarding the statements concerning the 991TT ECU and tuning, I am awaiting a response from our VRTuned manager. I am familiar with the product, and have witnessed what it is capable of, however I certainly had no part in designing it. I'm an avid auto enthusiast and a member of our sales team, not an ECU flashing guru. But again, I do apologize if the information posted is not accurate and I will get it updated immediately. Regarding the questions concerning the lack of big improvement on the 0-60 time, it can be said that these cars are rather incredible out of the box. It is certainly a difficult time to improve upon. Given the fact we've given our 991TT show and go, the 21" wheel upgrade certainly didn't do anything to improve traction or 0-60 performance. Thus, we made a comment in our post regarding that. Cold Arizona freeway onramp at night on 21" tires and heavy Niche 3 piece wheels certainly doesn't do much for 0-60. But we are still rather impressed with the fact we were able to improve over the factory capabilities given these circumstances. We certainly aren't here to insult anyone's intelligence. We've manufactured a quality product that we are using on our own 991TT, and it would appear we brought all the details to market without quite having all our technical ducks in a row. Rest assured, we are here to assist and provide quality service to anyone who is truly interested. I realize we have a long running love/hate relationship on this forum. I'm here to change that. All I ask is that you bear with me, and allow me to prove this to you.

Tommy,

The tuning box doesn't interfere with the factory lunch control, we don't even touch that part of the car. We're going to do 1/4 mile and 60-130 times as soon as we get a chance and I will post all of the detail on here as soon as I have the numbers.

As far as the price goes MSRP is $2500 and I can do a 15% discount for 6speed members. I know the quality and the performance of the product is great therefore if you're not happy with the product in your first 30 days. Call me and I will take it back and refund you the money for it.

I will post the numbers as soon as I get them and a video as well.

Everyone always wants to know what numbers did the car make or what 0-60 or 1/4 mile time did it run. There is so much that really goes on behind tests like this that all that really matters is the delta improvement. To compare to a magazine test or someone elses dyno is nearly impossible. First the magazine tests for 0-60 and 1/4 mile times do range quite a bit if you look at the different publications. But what makes these interesting is how strong the numbers are. This is because of several factors. First, most of these tests are running 93 octane fuel just like the fuel door says it should run. But if you are on the west coast, all we get is 91 octane. There is a substantial difference between the 2 octane points that can really make or break some of these numbers. When the do test 0-60mph times, they are on stock wheels, stock suspension, probably a guy who does not have his filmer in the car, and repeat the test on perfect pavement with properly set tire pressure. This also goes for the 1/4 mile testing. Unless you have rented out a drag track, getting this done on the streets is a tough feet to accomplish. Dyno tests, we wont even go there cause all that matters is your before and after as a collective test of parts or as individual tests. Not all dynos are the same even if it is the same dyno settings can change.

So our Porsche Turbo is equipped with 520 PS (382 kW; 513 bhp) and 620 N·m (457 lb·ft) of torque. Porsche rates the 0-60mph time at 3.4sec. Some magazines have gotten the Turbo S that has 40 more horsepower down to 2.6 seconds, though Porsche rates it at 3.1sec. So our numbers might be slow to the average internet user with these mods, but are they? With the VR Tuned Tuning Box Kit plugged in, our high flow headers, and titanium exhaust system, we dynoed the car at 494 to 499 awhp and 545 to 551 ft/lbs of torque. This gave us average gains of 60whp and 80ft/lbs of torque over stock. However our 991 Turbo was optioned with the factory Turbo S centerlock 20 inch wheels and sticky Pirelli tires. We upgraded to the Niche Wheels 2 piece 21″ setup which puts atleast another 5-7lbs of rotational weight at each corner. Rotational weight typically has a factor of 3. So this means we have added about 15-20lbs of weight per corner. With the larger diameter wheels, comes wider tires. The fronts stepped up to a 255/30/21 and the rears a 325/25/21. So now we also have more rolling diameter and pad on the ground. We have not shared this yet, but we also added some new Alcon 2piece floating rotors. The front rotors saved 1.2lbs but the rear rotors gained 0.6lbs. Again with a factor of 3, this puts the rear a bit heavier but the front helps balance a bit of the wheel weight add on. So not comparing apples to apples of a stock 991 Turbo chassis, what were our numbers?

We ran the car out in “Mexico” which had a bit of slippery pavement and rock pebbles from the cracked road. Trying the car with both 32psi in the rear and 40psi in the rear, we found the higher tire pressure worked much better for the street tires. Edmunds tested the car and did a 1/4 mile test on the 991 Turbo at 11.0 sec at 124mph. So with our extra rotational weight, 91 octane, and power mods, our 991 Turbo did:

0-60mph in 3.27secs in 153 feet
1/4 mile in 11.78 at 121mph
So the consensus here is that even though our 991 Turbo is making more power than a stock 2014 991 Turbo on a Dyno, to get proper and comparable 1/4 mile times and 0-60 times, we would need to revert back to stock wheels and tires and perform these tests on a race track with 93 octane and in controlled repeatable conditions. Here is the PBox times and a short video we put together.
