Tuner BOOST Question * Technical
Tuner BOOST Question * Technical
Not another redundant tune question about which tune is best.
Tech info requested.
First off let me start off by saying this is my first Porsche turbo. I have had other amazing cars in past/currently. The 991 turbo is better than every car I have owned in every way!!
Just had a Europipe installed. Love it. Now........
I am looking into the GIAC stage 2 tune(93 octane). My worry like some people is that if I tune my brand NEW car and have problem...... What's next. Pay to play.
Not interested in hp or tourque gains. Enough ppl on here make it clear that The car turns from a wild animal to beast mode instantly.
What technically does the GIAC stage 2 tune change?
1. Boost pressure #'s
2. Fuel/air ratio info?
3. Timing ?
4. Rpm redline increase?
5. PDK changes?
6. Also. Does this make exhaust louder again if dealer performed WE64 campaign?
7. Anything else important I missed you know about?
This questions all may sound silly to some of you, but I am on other forums for other cars I've modified and this info was provided by someone that knew their sh*t. Sorry if I sound incompetent here, but I was not able to find any info on this.
Granted. I am not a tuner and don't need crazy specs, just basic info to contemplate if I decide to go stage 2 w Giac.
I know other vendors out there are great tuners, but I'm only interested in GIAC. No hijacks please.

Answer below:
1. Boost pressure #'s
1. Boost pressure #'s
Max pressure is typically 19-20 psi, though the request will be torque based and move based on what is reported.
2. Fuel/air ratio info?We do richen the mixture in order to keep Exhaust Gas and cylinder combustion temperatures at bay
3. Timing ?There are a myriad of timing maps in this DME and the DME moves between them pretty liberally. That said, we've optimized some of the most used maps in an effort to keep to keep the timing advance more uniform.
4. Rpm redline increase? We do not move the redline at all on the 991TT models currently.
5. PDK changes? There are no options to upgrade PDK software. Though we do optimize torque control in the DME which helps with shift speeds and fluidity
6. Also. Does this make exhaust louder again if dealer performed WE64 campaign?I will leave this question to one of our customers to answer.
7. Anything else important I missed you know about?Torque control. These DMEs are based heavily on torque control. We do a lot with this to improve drivability and overall power output.
Lastly, I can add that we've calibrated stage 2 to be a reliable option for the 991TT platform. We're not interested in selling options we don't feel are safe to the general public.

Hi Nfall,
Sorry, not hijacking your thread because this is GIAC tune based, but Austin, is your tune fully OBD based. In other words, do we have to pull out the main control unit and send it to someone, or is it purely, you send us a programmer and we can do it ourselves?

My issue is not having a local GIAC tuner in my area.
That's why I was curious if we can do it ourselves via the OBD port with a hand
held device.
Appreciate the feedback though, and like Nfall, pretty much only considering GIAC at this time.

If you're not near a GIAC dealer, or maybe not comfortable with your local installer, you always have the option of removing the DME and sending it directly to GIAC for programming.
I am not a technical expert but my 2014 991 TTS has the GIAC Stage 2, Europipe and IPD plenum (as well as BMC filter and Champion race diverter valves). Driveability is completely unaffected when the turbos are off. Still silky smooth and refined and zero throttle twitchiness. Once the turbos come on the acceleration is a lot greater than stock. Much greater. The car explodes and rockets forward when the turbos are on -- but in a smooth non jerky manner.
In terms of noise, given that GIAC Stage 2 requires a free flow exhaust you are going to hear more noise. The noise generated by the multitude of available free flow exhausts for the 991 Turbo and Turbo S will vary considerably depending on your choice. I chose Europipe and am glad I did. From inside the cabin it is no louder than stock with the turbos off. With the turbos on you do hear some turbo noise (especially when the turbos are spooling down) and some more exhaust noise but NOT a dramatic amount of noise. Stated differently, this is a quieter option than some of the others which is what I wanted. I can still carry on a phone convo or talk in the car. If you want maximum noise and loudness Europipe is not for you.
In terms of ease of install, my GIAC Stage 2 was installed via OBDII port in under an hour. Obviously installing the other bolt ons took more time than that.

I was wondering if you had the chance to experience the difference after just the IPD was installed. Could you really feel a difference? Still on the fence on added it. Little concerned about warranty issues as I continue to build on my mods! Appreciate your thoughts.

I haven't. Do you need a different version of the tune to do that or can you just put race gas in?
No, your GIAC Tuner gave you the controller. Put 100 Octane , Sunoco 260GT, find at race gas.com. Be very close to almost out of fuel top off with 100 Octane. Change tune to race on controller. Hold on,the car just jump another 50whp!
