turbo territory

My 991 S build was in 997 turbo $ territory. Looks as if I may need to drop a few goodies

See, I look at it the other way around... I'd keep the Turbo on, as an added upgrade.

What was your build like? When I messed with the Config Tool, I was able to keep mine around $110K, but it took a hard realization that there are a LOT of options that made NO SENSE for a car that would never see a track:

* NO PDK (I prefer to shift myself)
* NO PDCC (are you REALLY going to notice this going to/from work?)
* NO PCCB (too $$$ and too many concerns about replacement/etc)
* NO Sunroof (I RARELY use a sunroof)
* NO Burmester (much too $$$ to listen to ESPN and Blue Collar Radio, plus iPod is lower bitrate to be noticed)
* NO Lighting package (would be nice, but not needed)
* NO Adaptive Sports Seats (can't get vented seats with adaptive)
* NO PSE (would wait for SharkWerks to come up with something)

But I did include:
* Metallic Paint
* Sport Design wheels
* Sport Chrono (this completely changes the driving experience, street or track, PDK or Manual)
* Sport Design Steering Wheel (relatively inexpensive and looks great)
* Bose stereo (better than base without costing $5K)
* Sport Seats Plus (better side bolstering)
* Two-Tone Leather (love the look plus it adds silver door trim)
* Center and Trim Strips painted to exterior (not too $$$)
* Heated & Vented seats (I live in Texas)

My guess is that dealerships will load up these cars with luxury options until they break 110-115k on average. Prices will be high no doubt.

The config tool let's you choose vented seats with adaptive now... I know this wasn't the case on the 997, but appears to be the case with the 991.

Probably a good assumption. There's always 1-2 options that I could do without on showroom cars. They especially like to include options which are new to the line to develop some market for them (PDCC on the 911, SC w/ Dynamic Engine Mounts).

Holy hell...

I'm discussing with the wife our next car, and I've narrowed it down to 2 - R8 and Cayman S. And after reading this thread, I wondered what the Cayman S would cost if I started optioning it out...

I started with the base Cayman S - $62k, and ended up with with $34k in options (not including quite a few options like the $8k PCCB, etc...). Over half the price in options. I've never heard of anything like it.

So it goes with German cars. How nasty does the R8 options list look?

A $100K Cayman is a damn expensive Cayman. Are you looking at new R8s or preowned? As much of a Porsche nut as I am...if it's a $15-20K delta...I might lean towards the Four Circles...

geez not a second thought, take the R8!
The Cayman is a nice car, but the R8 is badasssssss.
(even if the Audi Forum is as frequented as the moon)

The R8 had me around $13k for options, not including the $9k automatic transmission (that I'm not fond of).

I was starting at new, but may end up at preowned. Just not comfortable spending more than $100k. I was originally planning $130k, but it just doesn't feel right.

haha!!! I hear ya. I just might do this. The Cayman S sounded good around $62k, not at $100k.

Especially when I can find them around $30k used (obviously not PDK at that price).

*didn't mean to threadjack..., but damn, those options are crazy.

The cost of these cars base plus the high no./cost of options is starting to make me look elsewhere. Porsche is not exclusive anymore but they price it and their options as though it is!!

I am interested in the new turbo/GT 3 when it surfaces but expect them to be optioned up to $200k without too much difficulty. If this is the case a lot more cars enter into the equation.

My 991S build that I did on the PCC was $122K. I bet the cabs will be 8K more. Looks like I will put it off until the '14s come out. I am too superstitious to buy a '13.

Absolutely agree with everything you said. The market for the 911 is relatively small and other cars do come into the equation when the price goes sky high with all the options that dealers love to smack onto there. Plus, the economy isn't picking up speed. I don' know how much that affects this subgroup, but my guess would be that a lot of these 991s will be sitting on dealer lots due to a slow economy + sky high prices + lack of desirability in the 991 for whatever reason. I configured my 991s for about 110. Anymore, and I'd seriously just wait for the new Aston v8v.

Interesting little bit of info...14 is very bad in some cultures. Some architects will design buildings without a 14th floor. This was especially surprising to me when I traveled to Hong Kong.

Edit: Now that I think about it, I believe that many 991s will in the beginning will be optioned to around 120k. That's because everyone who is itching to get their hands on a 991 and be the first kids on the block with a 991 are more willing to pay more. Perfect business plan to gouge your customers. Then after all these people buy up the 120k 991s, then dealers will order ones around the 110 to 115k range since the initial surge in demand will wane. Anyone agree? Or does it sound like I am way off?

Porsche is one of the only cars where I think it is better to order a car and wait-this way you pay for only the options you really want as they can run the price up so much. You may strike a better deal for a car that is there but I don't think I've found any without some 'pork' that I would not want if I was ordering.
