It has been stated by multiple individuals with tremendous experience with BMW's that they are really getting away from a drivers car and overall getting soft. New 3 series will likely help bolster this opinion.

I tried the 650i with and without it, and the difference is substantial. The new M5 will come with hydraulic steering while the regular 5 series have electric steering. It seems that BMW is more serious about their ultimate driving machines than the no substitutes from Porsche... Those are much bigger and heavier cars, of course.

I guess we need to wait until feb 4th when some of our friends here take deliver.
I have a 997.2 and drove a 991 the other day. I didn't track it, but thought it felt comparable to the 997.

Drove the SLS on Thursday and it was a hoot! I must admit I was giddy from the sound, thrust, and hooligan ways. It's AMG at its best!

I find the price outrageous for the Basic Carrera / S models. Plus, It's cheesy that the new 3.8 engine actually makes less power than the previous GTS / Speedster / Power-kit 3.8 in the 997S. Nobody even calls Porsche to the mat for stuff like his. IE the 997 Turbo with 480HP was always said to have had 60 more HP than the 420 HP 996T even though the 450 HP x50 / Turbo S were available (even exclusively in 2005) before the 997T came out.

VW really upped the pricing stakes with the GT3 RS 4.0 and GT2 RS. Prices jumped 50K per model and they're not going down..... It's a pity. They have out-priced those who used to reach hard to buy a new Porsche....

I actually don't mind the basic cars getting softer and the GTx cars remaining the most focused. The 997 GT3 i drove recently is really a race car in disguise and the ride shows it. But the price gauging is getting gruesome.

I feel a lot like zzzspeed.
It does cost a fair amount to play. Determination of fair value is your question.
Certainly a matter of preferences once again.

One thing to consider is that many items that used to be optional (iPod connector, nav system, etc.) are now included in the 991. I would be curious to see a comparison of a 997S and a 991S adding in the options that are now standard so we can see a real apples to apples comparison.

Just for reference on pricing. MSRP on a nicely optioned 997.1 2006 C4S Cab = $120K.

My 991S, reasonably well loaded is $118, my 2011 997 with most of the same items was $108k; would love to know if I got $10k of now standard goodies buried in the base price of the new 991.

Warnica, I started to scribble down a short list of the differences, but it kept growing in length on me. Here is a list of differences between the 2011 997.2 and the new 991S that I came up with (and I've probably missed a few as well):
  • Max. Power: 400 hp (vs. 385)
  • Max. Torque: 325 ft-lbs (vs. 310)
  • 20” alloy wheels (vs. 19”)
  • Curb weight: 3075 lbs (vs. 3131 lbs)
  • Acceleration 0 - 60 mph: 4.3 sec (vs. ???)
  • Top Track Speed: 188 mph (vs. ???)
  • Reduced fuel consumption
  • PDK Transmission has been “refined”
  • PASM Standard
  • Brakes: 6-piston front, 4-piston rear
  • Enhanced PSM Standard
  • Dynamic Engine Mounts (included w/Sport Chrono Pkg)
  • PCM including NAV with 7” display (vs. 6.5”)
  • High-resolution 4.6-inch TFT color display in dash
  • Larger sunroof opening (w/no impact on interior headroom)
  • Sports seats std
  • Higher quality interior materials
  • Electromechanical power steering
  • Elevated center console
  • Electric parking brake
  • Coasting function
  • Auto start/stop
  • Quieter interior
  • Improved PSE
  • Extended wheelbase (100 mm) and overall length (70 mm)
  • Decreased height
  • Side mirrors mounted on doors (w/optional folding mirrors)
I don't know what options you chose in your "reasonable well loaded" build, but there are differences in some of the option packages as well (e.g. Sunroof, PSE, PDK, SportChrono, etc). Some of these I mentioned above, but I didn't look very deep into changes in the options packages.

Not bad at all. Thanks.
However, most of these are not items now included, but rather enhancements to existing items. I really do not have a problem with the car, was early on the list, etc., but think they just raised the price. to move upmarket. Not the end of the world.
