991 vs. 650i vs. CLS550

How do these compare? Similar spec, 991 costs about $10k more than BMW, $15k more than MB. Not sure about the resale values, I don't drive too hard although I like hard acceleration and cornering... I am thinking of defecting to one of them... (please do not ban me... )

Anyone here test driven 650i or CLS550?

The 3 are not comparable. The 650 and Cls are big and heavy vehicles, the Cls is 4 door. The BMW and CLS would be more luxury car than sports car, in fact the CLS is a sedan.

The 650 and CLS will feel smooth, comfortable and powerful with good low end torque while the 991 will have sharper handling.

I drove a new CLS 63 and was very impressed. In fact, if you could fit three people across the rear, I'd buy one. 650i? Meh.

I'd get a 650 gran coupe...

650 no please. Cls 550 excellent car. Had the previous model. Loved the car. Time to change to decided on the 991. The new cls is nice but not as exciting as the old one at the time. Still an amazing car but a big luxurious sedan. With lots of space. 991 no space, strictly kids in the back seats, but Cannot compare the driving pleasure of the 991.

You were impressed by either the 6.2 n/a V8 or the new 5.5 bi-turbo V8, both massive engines with endless reserves of power. What's there not to be impressed? The price of the amgs in my neck of the woods is discouraging.

The cls550 that o/p asked about will be comparatively tamer.

The above are not a fair comparison to the hardworking 3.8 that porsche produces which amazingly can still keep up with the amgs even in a straight line, with far superior handling. But if you want to fit a family in it, it has to be the cls or 650

Actually, according to Car & Driver, the new CLS550 60mph time is 4.2 sec, so it's faster than base 991. With 4 matic, I believe it will be even faster. AMG will be nicer, but I don't want to spend that much $$$...

I do not need 4 door, I prefer 2+2 with 2 doors... but I saw CLS550 driving by couple times and it looks so gorgeous to me, especially the LED headlight... As for 650i, you need to see it in person... the pictures do not do justice at all. The interior also looks much nicer than anything in the market, but 60mph is slower... 4.7 sec... Well, it's good enough... Hmmm....

Please see above link: CLS 0-60 is 5.1 secs. base 991 is much faster

Well, I don't know why, but mbusa.com figure is too conservative. (why would they do that?)

See below magazine tests. Car & Driver reports 4.2 sec, Motor Trend 4.3 sec. They are consistent...

http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/...n/viewall.html

http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/...50-test-review

4.2 sec is faster than 991 base without chrono. Porsche.com's 0-60 claims are more or less with magazines' figures...

I have been waiting for the 991 C4 BTW... I think it's not coming....

You want something bigger than a 911 but still fun? BMW M5. Everything bigger are cars meant for being driven, not for driving.

I don't mean to go on and on about this one point, but saw the article and IMHO the articles are mistaken. I have driven both the 550 and the 63 AMG and read countless reviews on the CLS 550. 0-62 is in the 5 seconds range which is itself very impressive considering the weight and size of the cls.

4.2 is Carrera S and AMG category. 991S with launch control is 4 seconds. See below article below
Thanks

Talk about none of those cars actually compete with each other LOL Here is my very biased opinion:

1) 650 - I would never buy that car, heavy, bloaty, and its massive. The rear seats are useless so you only really get a nice trunk. Its fast but nothing like the prev. generation 6. Feel like it could get boring.
2) CLS - Dunno, I am not a fan of Mercedes, I dislike their interiors and every single one of them (except for AMGs) are boring.
3) 991 - hands down one of the best, if not the best, "affordable" new platform car for sale right now. Its just better and they are fun!

** sorry very biased here

Drive them all and buy the one you like the best. This is after all the Porsche forum.
I solved this buy having an Escalade for all massive transportation issues. The rest of my cars are toys. :-)

Are you aware that they released a new 6 series on 2011? I'm not saying that what you mentioned still aren't traits, but the reference to the previous generation 6 seems incorrect.

A family member got a new 650i convertible recently. It is a very nice place to be and suited to purpose. I would not buy one for myself. The coupe is very attractive to look at.

I've been having the same problem, at least trying to justify $125k for a 991 S with the options that I'd want when I can just get a 550HP performance packaged CLS63 for $109k (probably $98-102k or so after negotiating). I realize they're different cars, but when spending $100k+ on a car, you do have to consider your other options. I guess I could always just buy a new Boxster S for $70k and a new CLS550 for $75k and I would have two cars that are 90% as good as their big brothers for just $20k more than the 991S with the options I'd want. Damn you opportunity cost, damn you to hell.
