Would Guam tip over if Porsche made an AWD Turbo mid-engined car with PDK?

They've got the AWD, they've got a mid-engined platform (Boxster/Cayman/Carrera), they've got turbos, they've got PDK. Just put the pieces together and watch the sales come in.

Was Audi worried about heritage of the R8 when they released it?
Was McLaren worried about heritage of the F-1 when they released the MP4?

Sorry if this is off-topic. I've been biting my lip long enough...

I believe (and I've stated this before) that heritage is a way to explain NOT doing something. Others may suggest that if it isn't broken, don't fix it. Fine, release a mid-engined coupe with the specs I've mentioned and see what will sell.

Something tells me the 911 will just go away (except for the 10% 'purists' who will take an additional 2 years to come around).
The Carrera GT was a very expensive specialty supercar, not in the category of a daily-driveable super sports car for the affluent masses, so not a defining car for Porsche. If they could have produced it at closer to 911 pricing, I do think it could have sold big, but that wasn't the plan.

I think they're now moving in the direction you describe with the 911, with the result that the 911 is fading away. The 996/997 was the first big step away from the original (but still danced), the 991 is another big one, and I predict that the next step will be at least as big. You're right that they could just take the whole leap now, but heritage is part of the brand and helps to sell cars, and the 911 is a big profit center, so I think they're making the business decision which makes the most sense to them. From a business standpoint, I can't say that they're wrong, but purists will still shed tears, as they should.

Just give them time. The stuff you mentioned is finding its way into the 991 with more to join soon (turbo, AWD, etc.), and the engine is working its way towards the middle.

You guys are getting too worked about about the numbers.

Without question every generation 911 feels less charismatic. But the 991, while objectively better in most every category, feels kinda lifeless. Doesn't get your blood pumping. The 911 has been zapped from its chassis.

I've had 6 911s including 3 generations. . . and a modern ferrari in the mix.

In the context of modern metal, to me the top driving sports car right now in terms of feel is the Evora. The best looking the Maser. I have to wonder whether the 991 is compelling enough to steal driving enthusiasts from the more engaging lotus or the look-at-me crowd from the drop dead gorgeous Maser.

Or a used F430 with a gated shifter for that matter.

Exactly my point... using the Pannie chassis to build another mousetrap... most of the development work has been done and is paid for. Engine location TBD but definitely no longer hangin far in the back. And yes, I know the new cars are still sporting the flat 6 but it's an exception nowadays and frankly the engine is more of a liability and serviceability is poor to say the least hence making it a very expensive drivetrain to work on and keep tuned up. Fun..fun...!!

Porsche just sold the record breaking number for 991 in April for 1090 cars.

http://blog.roadandtrack.com/porsche...es-roar-ahead/

So I don't think much people care about 997 vs 991, many people want more refresh 991 and this is show why Porsche has nailed it again.

Sheep.

Great car but when Porsche put some 911 back into these early cars with better steering and a less artificial driving experience, the early adopters will take a beating on resale.

IMO.

Porsche sales numbers were only so-so in my opinion when you compare to how Audi, BMW and Benz are doing.

These brands are seeing 20% increase month to month.

I dont think the 991 U.S. sales numbers are as good as Porsche would like to see.

They will never admit it but I dont think those are such great numbers considering 2011 numbers were down with less inventory and buyers waiting for the 991.

If one can wait there may be some decent deals in the fall.

If they do change the steering you are spot on.

All of us poor misguided 991 lovers.. Faster, safer, comfy, better looking, and better selling. Rats, I could have had a Lotus (but they may not be in business by the end of the year and I would need back surgery within a week) or the Maser (if I could just find that tow truck to follow me around 24/7). To each their own, of course, but if it is all the same to you nay-sayers, I will keep what I have.

There are many people who don't want to drive or buy 991 because of the old 911-ness, I did choose Cayman S over 997 base because I don't like the tail twitchy but then when I read the positive handling review of new 991 then I decide to buy it. I like Porsche because I can use it as DD, good realibility, good handling, good flat-6.

I believe Porsche needs to broaden the market for 991, not just only focus for the one who really like the old 911-ness driving style. Porsche will not care much as long as they still sell more and more 991.

Porsche can always say that it is 911 because of engine is in the *** and this show how good of their heritage/engineering to make new 991 more balanced car to drive, fun and faster car.

There are many bad examples of the company who used to stick with their old success and refuse to evolve.

N64 vs Playstation - Nintendo stick with the cartridge while Sony moving on CD/DVD, Nintendo has lost market share.
CD vs MP3 - many audio enthusiast has complaint about how bad the mp3 sound is, Apple don't care as long as they get 90% of market share.

Porsche has high ambition to grow the company, they are not like Ferrari or Lamborghini to survive on selling 2x,xxx cars/year. Why they build Boxster? Cayman? Panemera? Cayenne?

Because not many people will love their old 911-ness to death. They will not survive with just 911, so why not make new 991 appeal to more customers? At the end it is all about money.

You assume any of us would be willing to part with the best 911, ever!

Agreed that it's ultimately not at all about the numbers, but I'm trying to see how the numbers might help explain the driving experience, and I think they're quite revealing in that regard.

On the lifeless part, I suggest that you try the base 991 stripper with MT. IMO, it's more lively than the S with PDK and all the bells and whistles, and Evo seems to agree in their latest issue. But still not as lively as the 997 ...

Agreed also that the Masers are beautiful. Nothing looks better to my eye.

I suppose if they can tune the PDK, maybe they can tune the electronic steering....

maybe...maybe not.
