Third Test Drive of the 991 (Manifold)
For decades I have heard predictions that the rear engined Porsche is going away and that Porsche can no longer improve on the 911. Everytime a new generation arrives, there are those that say the 911 doesn't feel like a 911. But yet, the 911 keeps going and going...
There are many people who don't want to drive or buy 991 because of the old 911-ness, I did choose Cayman S over 997 base because I don't like the tail twitchy but then when I read the positive handling review of new 991 then I decide to buy it. I like Porsche because I can use it as DD, good realibility, good handling, good flat-6.
I believe Porsche needs to broaden the market for 991, not just only focus for the one who really like the old 911-ness driving style. Porsche will not care much as long as they still sell more and more 991.
Porsche can always say that it is 911 because of engine is in the *** and this show how good of their heritage/engineering to make new 991 more balanced car to drive, fun and faster car.
There are many bad examples of the company who used to stick with their old success and refuse to evolve.
N64 vs Playstation - Nintendo stick with the cartridge while Sony moving on CD/DVD, Nintendo has lost market share.
CD vs MP3 - many audio enthusiast has complaint about how bad the mp3 sound is, Apple don't care as long as they get 90% of market share.
Porsche has high ambition to grow the company, they are not like Ferrari or Lamborghini to survive on selling 2x,xxx cars/year. Why they build Boxster? Cayman? Panemera? Cayenne?
Because not many people will love their old 911-ness to death. They will not survive with just 911, so why not make new 991 appeal to more customers? At the end it is all about money.

Why i have chosen 991 because my new 991 just best out my beloved Cayman S, and I am happy with it. Porsche is Porsche, they are different than Ferrari, Mercedes, BMW. Do I care about electric steering wheel? Yes I do but the one on Porsche is much better than the one in my CLS2012 , BMW X3 so I think Porsche did the fantastic job with it.

PDK, which is now great (and this from a former 997.2 MT guy) will be improved. The steering, which is great, and the best electronic steering ever, will be improved. But for now, the Porsche is the pinnacle and I have one - you should too! If they get it too much better, I will buy that also - g-d willing!
Some times I find that it is funny to think 997 vs 991
- too less, if Porsche did an incremently change on 991, no I will not recommed to buy it, it is more or less the same like my 997, not worth to upgrade.
- too much, where is 911-ness?

I have a rally and AutoX this weekend. Seat time is seat time!
Hope you are there so 8 can say hello! This BB is great and everyone is a good sport, but nothing beats driving! And I would be happy to drive most any of the cars you all have. This will only be my 2d DE and I am anxious, and nervous. I have to look into insurance as well.

AutoX is great to do...I wish I could get to more of them.
I buy a package policy but my car is much, MUCH cheaper to insure than yours.
The one advantage of the 997.1

Seriously, with this much invested, my first time pushing it, and my inexperience, I probably will buy it for the two DEs I can likely make this year (the other, I think, will be VIR in November) no matter what the cost is.
I really enjoy AutoX and it is a good way to learn what you and your car can do without getting in too much trouble. I hope to do it 3 or 4 times this season.
Don't let Manifold here you talking like that.

Is your package for a season or per event? I'm not worried about insurance for autox, but still looking into it for DEs.
Not sure why my name was mentioned but, anyway, I recommend doing autox (as a complement to the big track, not a replacement for it), and I don't think separate insurance is needed for autox. Your regular insurance may cover autox, and even if it doesn't you'd have to be very reckless to mess up your car.

I agree with your points about AutoX, and it may be more my speed anyway.
And just FYI, I have USAA and they would cover DE and NOT AutoX because AutoX is "timed". But USAA does not cover full actual replacement value so a total loss could cost me $40K out of pocket. I am looking for a fixed value policy, but I am not sure that my umbrella policy would overlay that coverage. And trust me, if you are in an accident that involves another, and you are in a Porsche, (even an older one) you have a big financial target on you back.
And so you don't think I have lost all 991 objectivity, I just got a friend into a 2006 997.1 Cab. It was a great car for him, and a great car...it is just no 991
I signed up for a nine event pack in a year.
Manifold, I named you for three reasons: 1) it is your thread; 2) you have been vocal in questioning the 991 v. the 997 and BW just intimated that one of the FEW advantages of his 997 was it was older and therefore less costly to insure ( I am reading into that liberally); and 3) you have a great sense of humor.

The 991 is maybe a better 911. But unless I can track it and feel comfortable doing so then it's not as much fun nor as engaging as my base 997.1. IMHO of course.
It's not to often you can get to 130 on the roads of NJ.
