Don't forget there are corporate gas mileage standards and the 991 is pulling up other models. And I'm not looking for a political debate on the merits of the law or the government, just observing responsive actions. We're lucky those that don't like it can turn it off.

mcsha is infamous around these parts
I took delivery of my 991 C2 7MT with PASM on April 8th and have now had a decent amount of time to think about decision to buy the 991 over the 997. In short if i could go back, i'd easily make the same decision, but here's my key reasons:
1. I LOVE the 7 speed manual on this car. I think it's one of the best if not the best manual i have driven
2. Jeckyll and Hyde personality of the car. I live in Atlanta city limits (L5P area) where the streets are covered with pot holes and the paving is really patches of asphalt haphazardly thrown on the ground forming something resembling roads. The normal suspension setting is just perfect for this type of environment. But when i want to feel the more raw (more lack of other words) sport mode and PASM really change the car. It's like a totally different car. I find my self driving mostly in sport mode and normal suspension settings.
3. I prefer the 991 looks both inside and outside (but that's just a personal thing)

With that said, i think the 997 had a more feral feel to it. Also, this may be just me, but i had a better grasp of the cars dimensions. I felt more one with it. But the more i drive the 991 the more i'm getting to that level of comfort, but it's definitely not as natural.

Overall I think the improvements of the 991 made it an easy decision for what i was looking for, but that may not be the case for others. I would recommend driving the manual for those that are looking for more umf (can't find the right word).

Feral ... I like that.

My sense is that your feeling is mostly due to the 991 being quieter, its steering being less communicative, and the dynamics of the car being more planted (but less interactive).

But the performance of the 991 is certainly there in spades, so do enjoy your great car!

The funny thing is, I like the 991 more every time i drive it. I think in the long run I'll find the 991 much more in-tune with myself. On that note, I think i'm going to have a old school ripping in an empty large parking lot this weekend to become better acquainted.

On a different note, anyone know if there's a way to set the default to Sport mode?

Your like me, I generally drive in "Sport Mode" with PASM off. I wish we could change that to the default mode, but I have not found a way to do it. I know, it's one extra little button to push but still.....
