Ferrari / Aston to 911 or the other way around
Hi everyone
Has anyone moved from Ferrari to 911 or the other way around?
Trying to decide between 911 / Ferrari / Aston.
I like the 991 (thinking about S) for versatility, split personality etc and not overly "show off", but the Ferraris seem to be beasts - low torque, amazing engine sound and amazing design. reliability questionable? Aston... so & so. british so it probably breaks down after 1000m.
thoughts / ideas appreciated.

+1. Depends on which Porsche/Ferrari/Aston.
There are good and less-than-good (comparatively speaking) in each brand lineup.

I'm going to have to disagree with this. Modern Astons are pretty darn reliable in my experience.
I've not looked at a specific Ferrari yet, but i'm tempted.
I liked Porsche because of its overall balance (reliability, performance etc) - but having seen & heard some Ferraris they seem to feel more special.
I'm perhaps concerned about any italian car reliability and was curious about some real examples. Maybe i should post this in the Ferrari forum

It depends.... I wouldn't necessarily daily drive a Ferrari unless I wasn't at all concerned about resale or maintenance. But I'd take a 458 over your other choices.
I went from an 02 Carrera 4S Cab to an Aston Martin Vantage back to a '11 GT3. I cross shopped the 430 and R8. The GT3 is amazing.
You might try a short term lease on a new Carrera S after driving a GT3 and Vantage (which are being heavily discounted).
I did not have a negative experience with my Vantage. I thought it was underpowered, but the newer models remedied that problem.

The newer Ferraris are most definitely capable of being DDs. Maintenance has become much less of an issue, especially with 7 years maintenance included.
I have a 2012 California, 6 months old, and just turned 3000 miles last night. Drive it 3-4 days a week, 30-40 mile commute. Love it, love it, love it. It definitely feels special, has an amazing sound and just stirs the soul for me.
However, having said that, I still find myself drawn to the 991 for the same reasons as you Alex. One, it is less expensive and I would mind less about DD it at times. I am not really concerned about resale. You are starting to see more Ferraris with more miles, and being used as DDs. There is a well known Fchatter that put almost 30k miles on his 2010 California and only lost about 30% in 2 years. Would be hard pressed to find that kind of value being retained in other cars with similar mileage.
In my opinion, you are paying or have paid for the thing. Drive it. Enjoy it. It could all be over tomorrow! Cheers and good luck in the hunt Alex.

I absolutely love the look of the California. I would buy one if they made it a straight Targa and shed the weight of the back seats and the convertible mechanism too. It's up to 480hp now and IMHO those changes would make it the best car they offer. Otherwise, for $40K more the 458 Italia makes it a hard sell.
Maintenance and reliability concerns with a Ferrari are no different than any other vehicle....people that say otherwise have no experience with them.....if its a 10 year old 360 or an older 355 then yeah I'd be concerned with maint. costs....but I'd be concerned with any 10 year old vehicle.....the newer models (05 & up) are more than capable of racking up 100k miles with little more than annual service and a clutch or 2.....plenty of people DD Ferraris.
As far as resale.....Ferrari's are about as good as it gets..........and yes Alex, they are special
The new 991 is one helluva car....IMO, there isnt another car out there, for the same money, that out does this new Porsche.
Go for a bunch of test drives and then you'll know which one is right for you.

991s vs VantageS(?) vs 458? I can see 991s vs VantageS, but I don't see 458 in that mix. Even with price point aside, it just isn't a fair comparison. All 2012 458 comes with 7 yrs free services. Simple yearly service for Vantage. Personally, I wouldn't even compare 991 with VantageS, PDK vs single clutch auto? They are all very different. If cost isn't a factor, the choice is easy ; }.
