winter wheels dilemma..where to buy??

Hello all,

I have driven my 911s in the snow in CT and love the fact that a near super car can get around quite well in adverse conditions.

With my 997.2 I bought some used Carrera III wheels for less than a grand and put on sensors and rubber. I don't think I have that option for the 991 now. The car requires 19s to clear the suspension in the rear, but the offsets are very different from the 997, so I'm not sure the older 19s will work well.

There are very few takeoff 19s from base 991 carreras for sale (ebay etc..) and they all have summer rubber on them which is reflected in the price. Suncoast has relatively fair deals, but I just put PSE on the car, I don't want to spend $4-5k just for a winter set up... Any creative suggestions? For once, I'd be receptive to some replicas if they made them for the 991. But I don't think the aftermarket is there yet...? Also, using my current wheels isn't a great solution with the costs of mounting and balancing @ $200.00 a clip now. And I've got the satin platinum wheels which I'd like to preserve.

Thanks for any advice.

Recommendation--Buy a "beater"/"hoop'dee" ride for a 60-90 days of driving per year. Price it (acquisition cost + insurance) below the cost of the winter wheel/tires setup.

Take a look at Victor Equipment wheels made specifically for Porsche by TSW.

Good value IMHO, they are an OEM supplier to BMW and are TuV approved.

Not sure where you live but winter for me is more like 4-5 months. I finally decided just to buy tires for OEM wheels. With a lease I didn't want to spend money on winter wheels. Besides I like the look of my OEam wheels.

What tires did you buy and how much did they cost....I am thinking about doing the exact same thing.

We have the Sport Edition Cup 4 at less than $225 each. They are cast to OEM offsets and take the Porsche center cap. Please give me a call if interested.

Hmm would have been nice to have known sooner. I decided to keep OEM wheels and put winter tires on.

Are you sure this fits the 991? Wheels that fits 997 do not fit 991. Your website does not list these as fitting the 991.

From tire rack. Selection anywhere is VERY limited for 20" wheels. My car is a lease. I am getting tired of donating winter wheels for the cause.

Just showed up in my gargae from the UPS man. Funny they don't look that wide on the car. But they stand about 4 feet tall when stacked.

Using the same wheels for summer & winter is a pain and not cost-efficient over the long run -- been there.

Personally, I don't trust cheap aftermarket wheels on potholed NE winter roads. Especially, Not when used OEM wheels go for cheap...

Best solution IMO: Turbo I wheels. They are pretty available and go for around $1100 a set used and are great looking IMO. Check the marketplace here and Rennlist and eBay (I bought a brand new set there from a reputable guy for $2k a few years ago).

Or, if you like the looks (seems like most don't), get a set of Lobster Forks. Folks are practically giving those away.

Question?

Are all of the wheels everyone is recommending for the 991 or 997. I am pretty sure that wheels for the 997 will not fit on the 991. This would severaly limit selection.

I was not too worried about mounting and dismounting. My summer tires will be bald by the time I go to put winters on. Then I will change out for new summer rubber in the spring.

I checked with Damon and the Turbo I wheels do fit the 991S. I can't speak to the other 997 wheels with certainty but very likely that more than 1 does also fit.

I've done 8 track days and 6k miles overall in the OEM Pirellis and they still have plenty of tread left so not sure you will wear them out by then, but if you're close it may not be worth putting them back on... plus you can get the MPSS next season which is cheaper and probably better.

Terrific. Good to know. Pretty much every wheel on ebay says 997 or 991. But when you look at the offset, they won't work. I even called a couple of places directly and they didn't know that they were different.

The OEM Pirellis do really hold up well. I have almost 9k miles on them. I have had to work very hard to get them worn. I really want the MPSS for spring. So I may be a little rough on them

Yup. I'm no wheel expert at all but my understanding is you have some room for variability with the offsets -- they will just sit more or less flush with the fenders.

Not to get off-topic but yes the OEM Pirellis have been surprisingly good in performance and even wear across the tread (to which I give a lot of credit to PDCC. I've driven the crap out of them on the track and the sidewalls still look great). But, when I put MPSS on my 997 it transformed the car -- certainly the best "mod" I ever did on that car and I did almost all of them course of ownership. File this tire dilemma under "a good problem to have"
