992 vs 991S
992 vs 991S
Hi Folks,
I did a few searchs here and on Rennlist but I could not find any real concrete info..
I have never owned a Porsche before - I am typical BMW fan but I wanted to move on as we have 335 Sedan that my wife drives..in any case I was looking at the BoxsterS. This will be my first Porsche. I was originally going to go with the BoxsterS b/c of the rave reviews and well getting similar 911 Performance at a bargain price (in the Porsche World). I am not "rich" enough to keep buying cars so I want to make this one a keeper hence me looking at the 991 b/c that's what I really love. It is just beautiful! My dilemma now is which one..the 991 or the 991S. Obviously there is a price diff but will I need a 991S? I can spend the the extra $$$ but I want to be sure it's worth the extra $$$. I am dont plan on tracking, well at least not at this point
. I do love the RED brakes though
Other than the brakes, Rear Dual Exhausts and HP what if any are the major diff's?
Just to clarify this will be a DD and I do not and will not be having children. I want it to be comfortable but also deliver performance.
Your thoughts and comments are appreciated!
PS can I get the brakes painted as a special order??

Base model will more than get you to the promise land with a smile of your face. Are you looking for a MT or PDK?
The cosmetics you refer to are just that. A base can have Dual exhaust pipes added, as well as any colour caliper. However, there are some standard suspension features on the S that are options on the base model.
First thing is to set your budget and try to arrange a drive in both.
In addition, I have no doubt that you can find a pre-owned 991 to meet your needs.
I have a sneaking suspicion that most on this forum will chose the 911 over the Boxster...

I had a DCT (Dual clutch Tranny) with my 135..for traffic its great but it just seems to me that with a 911 MT is the way to go especially b/c I am looking at the "slower" engine..
Glad to hear about the cosmetics! I am looking at buying in about a year but I want something brand new b/c I intend to keep it for a while..if something is gently used I am open to it b/c then someone else has take the "depreciation hit" on it..
Agreed about the Boxster comment

I have a base Carrera with manual, and it is NOT slow. You have to rev it a bit higher to extract maximum performance, but it's got plenty enough torque for most day to day driving. I really like its Jekyll and Hyde persona, very quiet and luxurious when you want, a screaming banshee with you push the loud pedal.
I did own a Cayman previously and it is also an awesome car and or course the brand new one will be coming in the next few months. They are different drives but both worthy of the Porsche nameplate and the Cayman will be considerably cheaper.

In a year from now you'll have lots of 2012 and 2013's to chose from.
Nicely loaded with a healthy depreciation, with Yellow or Red Calipers.
I wouldn't rule out the pre-owned option if the budget is a concern.

Yes that's correct, however there is something about driving and owning a brand new car that nothing compares to a new car..
I have a base with 20"s and dual pipes from factory (Not PSE), its the best and fastest car Ive ever owned, its a joy to drive! and this is from a guy whose last two cars were a F10 550i and 1M.
I see a loaded 991 4S in my near future, but the Base is a fantastic car with very few options. You will never regret it.

Both are great but if you can afford it the 991S is the better car. Its faster and the difference is noticeable both in daily and spirited driving.
The base is fantastic, but as you indicated that your budget could accomodate the 991S i would strongly recommend you go that route.
Good luck!

indeed you wont regret base or S, manual or pdk, - its all very very good. The 991 is the first Porsche I've ever purchased new..had to do it at least once in my life. Whenever I think of whatever else I could have spent the money on or invested in, I just turn on the engine and go for a drive. There is simply nothing like a 911.
335 is a great car....had one and loved it !!
Its only a few hundred dollars to paint the calipers.
I think the new Boxster is absolutely gorgeous....I would seriously consider this.
Good Luck

Personally, I had a base 997.2 and bought a 991 S for my current Carrera.
I have a base with 20s and PDK. I've driven both and this is the one I chose, but it's a personal thing and I don't track it so I'm not looking for that extra HP to beat the competition. I would try the base with PDK. People are right that you have to give it a little extra RPM on the start and my PDK does this by revving to 3000 with the clutches only partially engaged if you are quick with the accelerator. It's a nice sensation and it doesn't hurt the clutches like it would with a dry clutch system. My 997.2S just gasped for breath for a couple hundred milliseconds; with this one the engine catches immediately and you're gone.

..I am hoping for the exact same feeling b/c it is quite a lot of $$$. AGREED! If someone is a car enthusiast they should own one 911 in their life time..This is why I am taking my time, saving my $$$ and aiming to get the best I can afford..I think it needs to be an S..Both are great but if you can afford it the 991S is the better car. I have had both base and S 911's, there is always a discussion about the merit of a S over the base. Both are excellent cars, the transmission and body style are the same. The engines are different and certain suspension elements are options on the base and standard on the S. the brake size and calipers are different on the S. the S is faster, but I would recommend test driving both and buy what you want and can afford. PS I saw a 997 4S yest in garage..it was stunning! However from what I ready here this is completely a new car that is a good DD..nonetheless it was gorgeous!
