SmartTop for Cabriolet shipping Monday

Hi guys, just a quick note the Smart Top for the 991 Cabriolet (that we have been waiting months for) is shipping Monday. I just talked with them on their Facebook page and was informed stock is limited and to order soon if you want one. I have absolutely no affiliation with them other than a satisfied customer of two previous SmartTops. It's a truly great product.

Just saw they are having their annual sale but the 991 top is not included. Also noticed you need a windows laptop to program it. Do you know if there is any way to use a Mac?? I am a windows free home. Don't really want to have to buy a laptop just to program it.
Im really interested getting this for my car when it finally shows up. Nicilo, Have you gotten one yet for your 991 and installed it?

Actually the 991 price is less than I paid in past cars.. I'm anxiously awaiting delivery hehe.

There is a Mac version of their software now..yay!

Here was my C4S install..

..and here was my Audi S5 install.

Download the 991 manual from here.

We are also a Mac household (have been since 1984) and the only copy of windows I use is a bootcamp partition on the Macbook Air for running Ross-Tech VCDS diagnostic software and fiddling with things like Smart Tops once in a while, etc. Love that they have the Mac version now. Thanks Mods4Cars!!!

Wow, no idea how I missed that. I swear I just looked at their site and it said use a pc for adjustments and programming. Glad I asked the question on the forum!

[...]

Aside from noticing a questionable invitation to exceed the wind load limits on your top by 36%, I didn't see anything on that site that sounded interesting. I'm obviously missing something as a new Cabriolet owner.

Exactly what does the SmartTop widget do that my top controls don't do right now? Start the top cycling while I walking to the parking place?

Hi Gary,

the device allows several modes of convertible top and other accessory operation not normally possible.

As you mentioned, opening while walking to the car, as well as closing while car locks and you walk away. I put the top down for even short trips, and adore this as I always button her up when I'm away from the car. It makes things perfectly seamless.

One-press (or pull) in-car opening and closing..no need to hold the button down.

Windscreen optionally opens/closes with the top on the 991.

The windows can be set to go down or up on opening or closing. Myself, I really hate the windows going up when the top is going down..almost as much as holding that button down for the operation while I'm doing other things. Separate from the top operation, the rear windows can be programmed to go up or down along with the front window operation without having to use the rear window operation toggle switch.

In the 997, I didn't have seat memory which meant I couldn't have the side view mirror tilt down during reverse. The Smart Top enabled that functionality in addition to other benefits, like allowing a horn blip on locking and unlocking - as opposed to the silent factory operation where I had to try the door handle to make sure it was locked every time.

From the operations instructions:

Someone who is not at all bothered by holding the switch to open or close the top and doesn't desire additional functionality may realize less benefit from all this, of course. For me and my style of driving a cabriolet, it is an absolute Godsend.

I do the same, putting the top down for trips even as short as half a block if the weather tempts me. The one-touch feature sounds excellent with two caveats that will vary between owners:
  • Not a good thing with children or pets, but many owners have neither;
  • Easy to forget the top is in motion and pull away so briskly the car will exceed the wind limit before the top can tuck itself away.
The first doesn't apply to me, but I do confess to being brisk at times and forgetting that computers and other devices are sometimes slower than I might wish. This afternoon was the first time I lowered the top for a merely half-block run from the gas station to the target restaurant. I pulled out in front of a distant car that should have been no issue, but he decided to hammer the throttle to make a point with his... Floggismobile? Hard to say what that lump was, but he had it straining to reach me. I do know that my brisk bone cut in without consulting me and the PDK reached redline in second gear in that short merge maneuver.

That violated only my personal rules on breaking in a car, but if I'd pushed the button to lower the top and gone immediately into driving mode, I'd have laid the shattered, crumpled top back over the engine cover and been required to limp home in disgrace.

Probably the one-touch operation needs a driver with more self control than me.

Gary
