Key Fob Question Answered

A while ago a person asked would a car theif mistake the dummy key for a real key while trying to steal the car. The answer is yes, I watched an intruder on my property case my house. He went into the car and tried to steal it thinking the dummy FOB was the key. Luckily the key was no where near the car. He took the dummy FOB and it cost me $26.
I guess to be careful remove the dummy key after driving. Glad the question is answered. By the way, this is the second time the car has almost been broken in to. The first time I happened to stumble upon the person before they tried to get in.

Holy damn! Did he shatter the window? You need to beef up security! Not to mention get a gun.. Btw in addition to those ADT signs (or whatever company you have) outside your property, you should get NRA member signs right next to them. Subtle way of telling possible intruders that you have guns and are not afraid to use them. I know I wouldn't if I saw someone breaking into my 911. Oh and call 911. Hah

Wow that could've ended very badly for you when you actually ran into the thief...
I do not understand why on earth Porsche designed it like that!
It's just trouble waiting to happen in a coupe and with RSVP invite for the cab...
They should have done something nice like they Aston Martin design (crystal dome) or even the economy version in the Benz (alum. cap with the key part attached which fits flush like a push button when inserted).

Thanks for posting your experience!

To update, the intruder returned a third time and fourth time. This time, we have found his name because he had dropped his trespass notification from the Target store up the street from us. Who knew Target gives written notice when they kick a person out.

On the lighter side, proves how desirable my 991 is.

On the more serious side, a big symptom in the USA of the next generation
Being unprepared and unwilling to try to achieve through hard work and
Commitment to community.

My experience is that the near field sensor is pretty good in this car. I had the real key in my pocket and I was literally just outside the driver's side with the door open. A friend was in the driver's seat and I asked them to start the car. The car would not start. Separately, I agree that a start button or something instead of a fake looking key would have been a better design choice. I hope the auto theft community comes up to speed soon on the new technology and can recognize the difference.

I must admit, the car at first was not locked. Classic situation where I arrived home I went into the house to do a couple of things before I put the car in the garage. It is always covered or in the garage when not in use.

Other then that, I lock the car at all times when out and about.

Hopefully this will be the end of the story. Last night again our friend came back and went through my wife's car. He did return the FOB that was taken. Police will be here to take the FOB as evidence as it should only have mine, my wife's and his fingerprints.

The car at the time was not in the garage, but inside our property. He had to walk through out gate to get in. I just got home and was in the house taking care of some thing before moving it to the garage. The first time he came was to see if I was home, the second was to see if he could take the car, the third time was probably to get in the house, and the fourth time was to look through my wife's car. I live in Sherman Oaks CA, in a quiete neighborhood. However, we are next to a major street known for drug users, prostitutes, and vagrants. If you guess Sepulveda you are right.

The police are taking it pretty serious because of the number of times he has come back.

Wow, that's scary. Hopefully they have enough to press charges or at the very least encourage this guy to move on.

I think a happy ending, spent an hour with the police and it turned out, his birthdate was on the back of the Target trespass notice. They called another set of police, and they seemed to get all the information they needed.

In the end, I give the entry system 8/10 for being effective in not allowing the car to be taken. As well, the new FOB was $26 in stock, so -1 point anyway. However, if you by accident leave the key in the car as we all have done, then there is a big problem. Minus 1 point for the obvious.

Maybe a smaller profile for the FOB would be good, maybe half the size.

Wow that is a crazy story ... as far as the keyfob I thought you need to insert a pin in the side of it in order to get it out of the fob hole.

So he's been there FIVE TIMES and you're still leaving your cars on the street instead of putting them in your garage?

Is this a serious thread?

Sounds serious enough if the guy is going through a gate to get onto his property - doesn't sound like the car was out on the street. I'm going to go with junkie?
