Installed detector

There are a lot of posts on installing different detectors in 991's. I am in the process of doing just that.

I am curious for those you you already using detectors. Are you really dwelling on what the display says or reacting to the threat? I know there can be a lot of false's but if you are being aggressive there is not a lot of time to dwell on "is this real?"

Do you get to the limit then start dwelling on the severity of the threat to access the area for next time? I'd like to hear some opinions based on experience because it effects where you might want to mount the detector or the display for the detector.

If the detector goes off and I am exceeding the limit, I slow down. There are false alarms but rarely on limited access highways. In Pennsylvania only state troopers may use radar and from what I recall they do not use moving radar units.

I was in Delaware a couple of days ago and had a steady Ka band signal and alarm. It lasted a couple of miles and did not diminish. Turns out an unmarked Delaware police car was to my far right and behind. I guess he was waiting for me to punch it.

Even with a 9500ci installed, the display mounted on my steering column in normal line of sight and the audible alarm available to be heard, I find I don't speed too much over what I'd do without the unit. I just like to be informed when I'm being monitored so I can adjust a bit if need be.

My laser jammer (escort 8500ci) nailed a cop sitting on the side of the highway last night with zero lights on on an unseasonably warm January night. I was not speeding for once and it really made me happy.

I'm in agreement with you. My Turbo has the V1 mounted way up on the windshield and I have to volume turned way up but around town/in urban areas I'm just going with the traffic. There's really no need to speed. One just ends up at the same stop light as the other cars. And with all the inattentive drivers, suicidal bike riders, pedestrians with their head up their you know what and who cross in mid block, against the light, while on their cell phone without looking up, etc. there's too much at risk.

In fact now when my mom or dad is in the car and I'm running them around town I never turn the thing on because the flashing LED and alarms from occasional false alarms bothers them. (I use these as a reminder to stay vigilant.)

But I do like to know when there is a radar or laser speed trap operating. Being situationally aware if one is pulled over can help. Being situationally aware allowed me to argue my case to a TX city cop late one night when he pulled me over on I-20 when it was another car passing in the fast lane that was speeding. But the city cop only had eyes for my Porsche sports car not for the run of the mill tin can that went flying past my car that night. But by being aware and pointing out the situation to the officer I was given a "warning" instead of a ticket.

Out in the open I'll touch the brakes first and ask questions later. But the V1 has such a good range it almost always picks up a signal way before I come upon the trap. And paying attention is still important too. I got nailed for a ticket not paying attention and having a AZ state police officer coming from the other direction on I-40 east of Flagstaff cite me for speeding. He flipped on the radar unit even though it wasn't an instant on radar gun. But I should have spotted his cruiser coming towards me.

Agree - most times when going fast (and how can you avoid it) one does not have time to look at what they hit you with, you hear the alert and go to the brake immediately. I have mine mirror mounted. Here is a pic of my install:

I like to have the display visible because when running down the highway with windows down and radio on you won't hear it, so with the display you at least have a chance of seeing it. If it wasn't for that I would probably just stick it in the center console or something and just use the LED but living in Florida I tend to have my windows open 99% of the time and can't hear it even with the volume all the way up. This is on a 9500ci BTW.

I don't have my 991S yet, but hopefully within a week or 2
I also have the 9500xi and thinking about the mirror mount, but now that I see from your picture... it hangs pretty low below the mirror, almost half-way down. Doesn't it give you some sort of visibility issue?

No visibility issues whatsoever. I would have liked to have moved the detector closer to the windshield, but the mount I got just won't allow it. Before I reconfigured the mount, the detector was too far forward and I could not see the display unless I moved my head back and turned it to the right. Now all I need to do it look towards mirror and can see the display clearly. The position does not get in the way at all, and I can see everything. It is not an impediment to visibility whatsoever to me.

How do you like the 8500CI?
Do you have the optional laser shifters or Zr4s?

I love the Escort. I had the Porsche dealership install it and hardwire it into the electrical mainframe. I got the optional laser shifters offered by Escort. I've gotten one ticket in 11,000 miles that was not the result of anything the detector could have helped with. The laser shifters never false alarm except when I pull into the driveway of a buddy of mine. Never on the road though.

Thanks...
Do you have the PLUS option?
I am debating on if I should get the GPS or not. What about false radar alarms?

Thanks. Did you get the mount from Escort or from http://www.countryjoycrafts.com/escortmount.html? Not sure if they are the same mount?!

No I got it on ebay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/MirrorMount-...e42c50&vxp=mtr

Do you have auto dimming mirrors. If yes, you need to be careful because the 991 does not give you a lot of room to mount. They do not have a long stem connection, so countrycraft and blendmounts will not fit. Plus they are costly. The one on ebay worked for me and was cheaper and a lot more adjustable. Note that I had to reconfigure the Escort mount a little (rebend it) to make it fit the mount the way I wanted so it would sit closer to the windshield. If you do not have auto dimming mirrors, you may have a little more room for the mount, but I don't know. Let me know if you have any more questions or want pics. Be happy to help. PS - I had the countrycraft in my Infiniti, it is well made and everything, but it will not fit Porsche.

Hi PorscheCrazy
There are some reviews of this mount on amazon that mention excessive vibration of the radar with this mount. Did you notice this with your setup?

Thanks
