Buzz, rattle, squeak

Dropped off the 991 at the dealer to have the clear bra replaced (had a hair preserved under the frunk panel and had loose edges) as well as to remedy noises. They located the source of a steering wheel squeak - lubed at what they referred to as the firewall - but couldn't locate the other noises. Those noises are generally associated with really rough or what we call normal roads in Pennsylvania. What troubled was a comment by the service manager. He told me that Porsche warranty generally only covers the repair of squeaks noises for the first three months.

I pulled out the warranty book from the glove box and showed him that there is no specific exclusion for such noises from the warranty. Although there is excluded "normal" noise I told him that rattles that squeaks are not normal

Anybody else have experience with this?

Attached is the Porsche d'jour they gave me To drive a supercharged hybrid.

Coming from a former Mercedes owner, I was originally told that squeaks, rattles, and such were not covered and implied they were normal and expected.
Now with my 991 officially one year old today, the techs at my local dealership don't complain at all. If I mention a squeak, bump, rattle, whatever, they go right at it to try and clear it up. Your maintenance manager is probably bored of searching for minor annoyances. Well, if its his job, he's got to do it. You may want to bring it up to the general manager or make a mention of it when you get the Opinion Email. Porsche does read them. I hoping its just an isolated incident in your case. You may want to document this for future references.

That is very disappointing. 911 drivers often continue to buy 911. You would think they would do what it takes to make you happy. I am pretty sure my dealer would mow my yard if they thought it would keep me happy. Thank goodness I have not had any squeaks... yet.

One thought would be to ding them on their survey and then check the box that you would like to hear from Porsche America. Or let them know before you take the survey that you are not happy and will be forced to explain it on the survey. They are compensated for the all "5"s on the survey and dinged for anything less.

Another things that always makes me feel better it to take their crappy loaner cars to a track day. See below. For about three days it smelled like someone cooked a chicken in it

That is too funny, something I always suspected and the primary reason I would never buy a demonstrator.

The sales manager and the primary service manager have always bent over backwards to make me happy at this dealership. Yesterday's exchange was with a lower lever manager who has probably received standard "marching orders" ...I posed this thread because I was wondering if there had been a change in north american Porsche warranty implementation.

I'm in Appleton and bought mine from Bergstrom but interested to know which dealer you purchsed from in Milwaukee and if you are happy with them? I haven't been happy with Bergstrom at all.

Sweet. I am in Appleton all the time. Headed out into the snow right now!

I bought and serviced at International and could not be happier. I am pretty easygoing but they have never fail to make me feel like I am their only customer.

Hope to see you at Road America this spring.

Marc

new car...

my 991 has developed few rattles here & there since Dec. my 997 MkII had no rattle after 2 years. i hate to go back to dealer for fixing rattle issues. some techs are careless so they'll break more pieces.

Here is the skinny on how it works:

Dealers are paid for repair, not diagnostic when it comes to rattles

Rattles need to be replicated in order to be fixed. Repair is often as easy as adding felts or replacing interior parts.

Therefore, many dealers don't get paid to drive your car around to figure out what's rattling.

The Solutions?

Go to a dealer that is more service oriented. This dealer won't solve your problem because they don't want to take time in figuring it out unless they get paid for every minute.

Also, do some troubleshooting yourself. Have a passenger with you to pin point what's causing the noise by touching parts of the interior.

Lastly, combine your rattle fix with a bigger warranty repair. Dealer will charge the time onto the repair job.

I assume you have winter wheels/tires on your 991? What tires brand? Can you PM me info and pics please?

I just bought an MB from International Autos for my wife and I am very happy with them also. Wish I had bought my 991 there!

I'll hope to be at RA in May, if my schedule permits.

Paul

A friend keeps telling me that as soon as winter is over, most rattles will stop and that it depends on the rubber mounts that get hard and dry because of the cold. Any opinion on this?

Partially bogus. I live in Florida where it gets cold twice a year. I mean it drops in the 40s!!
My car still squeaks, rattles, and especially rolls

A very thin application of white silicon on the rubber seals helps the squeaking.

i think your friend is right. my car didn't make much noise other than the left side speaker. soon as it got colder here in VA I'm hearing noise everywhere and it's so annoying.

Thank you all for your replies. I think it may be partially right. After all I only hear one constant rattle, coming from 'where the retractable spoiler is', or at least it sounds like that....we'll see....Blizzard going on right now!
