Engine oil temp, what does it mean?

I noticed the car takes a while to come to normal temp from morning cold start. Outside temp 47F. Short 2mi local road then highway for next 12mi.
@ 4.7mi / 15min / avg 40mph: Coolant temp: 200F, oil temp: 135F
@ 11.7mi / 21min / avg 50mph: coolant: 200F, oil temp: 200F

By the time it hits 200F oil, I'm usually at or near my destination, if I'm lucky i can WOT on the last interchange. So the car doesn't get to be in the fun RPM range for much time.

Do you need to wait for oil temp? All the cars I've had before only showed coolant temp and once that's a operating temp, I can drive it WOT. And the other cars coolant temp gets to normal about 2-3mi mark from the local drive.

You can drive it as soon as you start it, but best to let the oil warm up some before revving it hard. The 991 has a water to oil intercooler that will keep everything well regulated, so not to worry unless it stays cold or goes critical. The instrument is a tradition in 911s- from back when they the air cooled engines were essentially oil cooled. They needed to be well warmed up before they were revved much- and not allowed to get and stay over heated for very long before parts began to fail or warp.

Thanks Chuck, I'll stick to babying it till the engine oil starts moving into operating temp then. Maybe gives me one more interchange

250 mile hwy drive, outside 50 degrees F, in normal mode; 70 - 80 mph, oil temp was 235 mostly. Would drop to 230 at times. Oil level 3/4.

Seemed higher than I remember....

My technician said to make sure Oil temperature is at least 165'F before using full power etc. Takes about 6 miles of normal driving. As my engine is X51 and has third cooler I am not supposed to use the Sport or Sport+ settings until oil temp is at the 165' as selecting either opens the third cooler and delays the oil coming up to temperature.

Remember most consumer grade engine oil op temps are 100c or about 212f.

Think about that.

Yeah, the problem there is, with an X51 package, the temp won't go above 204f in Sport/+.

I let mine heat up to about 200 in normal then switch to the Sport modes

Not sure if this is necessarily true. Correct me if I'm wrong but the 100ºC/212ºF temperature is how the oil viscosity is measured according to the SAE guidelines, don't know if that has anything to do with the actual "op" (which I take to mean optimum) temperature.

IIRC the challenge in lubrication is ensuring adequate flow of the viscous cold oil at cold start (hence the 0w) while not allowing the hot oil to become too fluid (not coating moving parts sufficiently) at higher temperatures...

That's how I understand in, YMMV of course.

I noticed the oil temp go into the 240-250 range today with spirited driving and keeping the engine at high revs. I am thinking this is within the norm, but with the sophisticated thermal management, wouldn't the car not allow the engine to get that hot, or is there a performance benefit keeping it higher?

Were you sport? If not i would recommend it.
No i think its about emissions.

I may not have been in sport, just the manual mode for pdk, I suspect that is why it let it get that hot, based on the pcm temp gauge that is mid-range, which probably is better for emissions.

I have X51 and have seen 210 - 220'F many times for the oil temperature. Comes back down though pretty quick.

In Sport & Sport Plus modes, additional oil cooler kicks in vs normal mode.

Oil temp should drop 10- 20 degrees quickly
