Snowcross in a 991
Snowcross in a 991
Road America put together their first snowcross, essentially an autocross but in the snow. Except that no one told Mother Nature that it was supposed to snow and not rain. Instead of having a nice 6-12” base of snow to slide around on, we had puddles and ice. They had three events; timed autocross, skid pad and a timed speed stop. The autocross had three categories; AWD, RWD and FWD. Snow tires allowed but no studded tires. I went hoping to practice my Scandinavian flick and car control. Not sure I got that with the course being such a mess. But the 991 did a great job and I had fun (even if I froze my butt off).
Results:
#1 in the RWD timed autocross (7th overall). And way ahead of many AWD snow tired cars. And it annihilated everything in the speed stop (start from a standstill, race down to a cone, around and then slalom back and stop in the box). I completed it in a 13.1 with 2nd place over a second behind.
Here are some pictures. I will get a video up to YouTube this week.

Those are great pics. Looks like a lot of fun.
And if you placed 7th, I am totally curious to know places 1-6.

I was 1st in RWD. Places 1-6 overall were all AWD (5 Subarus and an Audi S4). I beat 17 AWD cars, 9 RWD cars and 10 FWD.
It was a lot of fun. I drove it with Sport plus traction on and Sport plus with traction off. I am not sure which was faster. They flashed your time when you crossed the finish. I was usually full throttle and sideways so I didn't get a chance to see it.
Because the "track" had places where we wore throught the ice, I drove to those spots and used them to turn or brake.
Lots of fun.

Glad to hear the cars that beat you were AWD. It would just be weird to think of any FWD car outperforming a Porsche, even on snow / ice where FWD affords a bit more control than your typical RWD car. (Altho, to be fair, a typical RWD car has the engine in the front and thus less weight on the back tires)
And THAT is why we love driving a rear-wheel / rear-engine car!

Many say RWD is better than RWD no matter where the engine is located. The issue with FWD is that you are asking the front wheels to steer and provide forward motion. RWD is better… as long as you know how to drive it. Having the engine over the rear wheels is good for accelerating and braking. Sliding it gets challenging because of the weight being out back. It just want stop keep rotating.
Here are two videos of the auto cross portion (watch in HD). If I could be proactively defensive. It looks slow because it is. The track was 80% ice and 20% slushy puddles. It looks like I am hacking at the steering wheel because I was hacking at the steering wheel. I was driving from one puddle to the next. It is where the traction was located. I would be sliding and then hit a small patch of pavement and yank the wheel to get the car turned.
