Had the same thing happen to me a couple of weeks ago at my 2nd oil change, 4,600 miles. I was absolutely postive I had put in just under 8 quarts and there was no leak so I drove it on a fifteen mile trip and kept my eye on the pressure which was OK. It still did not measure the level. But, the next day, after driving a few miles, it started showing the level and has worked ever since.

My first oil change was at 1,600 miles and the guage started measuring immediately after that change so it will be just "wait and see" for the third oil change.

Hope yours starts measuring soon as it does make you worry and have doubts.

I am still debating when I should change oil. Three thousand miles has always been my change point even though I have been using Mobile One in my vehicles since about 2001. In that time, I have never had a vehicle to use a drop of oil or need any motor work. I have thought about moving to 5,000 miles but I would never wait until 10,000 miles. I kind of justify the extra money and time by thinking I get more money and a quicker sale of my old vehicles by having my maintenance records which show maintenance and oil/filter changes at lesser intervals than are required.

I was just like you and used to change it every 2500 miles. Then I changed it to every 5000. Now after being by the dealer that they don't recommend it less than 10,000 miles or 1 year, I'm considering extending it. It's probably going to work out at 7500 for this one. In the mean time, my dealer topped it off.

Same thing happended to me. I thought I had warmed the engine enough, but guess not. Drove it a little longer, and "low and behold" it started measuring again!

i usually change Mobil 1 oil every 4-5K miles on all my cars
This number was based on the simple logic that one should be concerned
when the oil level drops (even by 1/4 qt) Because this means shrinkage
on the molecular level that shall not be addressed permanently by adding extra oil on top of it.
This level drop occurs usually at around 5 K on my previous 997's..
Now changing oil more frequently like every 3K miles can certainly not hurt our six figure machineries...

Given the propensity of these engines to burn oil, I doubt that the oil was changing on the molecular level. The engine was most likely using the oil. In both of my 997's, I needed to add oil every 1000-1500 miles. This is right in line with what the factory expects. The engine in my 991 however has not used or lost any oil in a bit over 10,000 miles.

Oil shrinkage? Are you serious? By the way, your car didn't have break-in oil in it unless you put it in there.

not sure what oil the car comes with but
before i changed, around the first 300 miles
went down 2 lines and later 3 lines
while this is still considered normal and labeled in green,
I was not comfortable having this reading.
When i said shrinkage i meant some oil was obviously
burn ...
