interesting observation 2012 991

drove the car from Buffalo ny to lake placid ny. Home to the winter olympics 1932 and 1980. Playing around sport mode and non sport mode and watching the oil and water tempertures. When in the non sport mode the water temperture was approx. 225f and oil abnout 200f.Switched to sport mode and water temp. dropper below 200f. My guess is the exhaust system is letting more exhaust flow out therefore the water temp. would drop. Anyway the car was a treat to drive except for all the state troppers that were around. Found out they has a training center not far from lake placid..Did get picked up but they let me go.The tropper said cruise a little slower. Very nice guy.

According to Snowczar, Sport/+ options allow for more cooling which will account for the temp difference. I notice it also runs a tad bit higher in standard mode, but never anything to worry about.

I read here in an early posting that a valve adjusts flow in the oil-water intercooler in Sport mode.

I just drove back from Long Island, in heavy traffic, and the oil temp was above 225, but below 250 steadily in normal mode - even when traffic ended and we were moving at a reasonable clip.

The car is designed to operate at the higher temperature in normal mode for fuel economy and emissions. The oil and water thermostats adjust to the mode.

You are absolutely spot on. It's stated in the 991 tech manual.

My oil temp moves, my water temp is always the same, even after heavy track use no matter what mode I'm in, does not exceed 90C.
