Yes.

Usually long sleeve shirts, non-flammable shoes, etc... Other common sense things (not too over the top). At a good event, safety is first and foremost. It becomes second nature, though.

How does one sign up for this? I just signed up for the Porsche Sport Driving School's Two-Day High Performance Driving Course at Barber Motorsports Park inBirmingham, AL but that's not where you had your track sessions. Is there another Porsche Driving Experience also available I don't know about?

Porsche Club of America (www.pca.org) runs Driver Ed (DE) days in all of its regions. They are generally well run with vey good instruction. Less expensive that the PCNA sessions; track time varies with the size of the turnout, but its generally as much as you want in a day in any case.

Chuck is right. The other option is Skip Barber driving schools. Check them out as they run courses around the country.

I was lucky enough to get invited to a NJMP member track day. NJMP runs a country club type membership where members get dedicated track days etc. usually much smaller numbers than a normal PCA track day. We had a total of 10 cars across 3 classes that day and only myself and 1 other in the novice group. I don't think it gets better than that for track days.

It was good experience to take the car out on the track to see what the capabilities are but I think I would get a dedicated track car if I wanted to do more track sessions on a regular basis.

 

I should mention that the Porsche Club is generally more "****" than other track day organizers about safety. You need an approved helmet and your car gets a pre event tech inspection on a preset day. Frankly, I think that it is well worth it to know that you and you car- and very importantly- all the other drivers and cars are properly prepared.

A 991 is capable of doing amazing things on the track- and unfortunately, off the track, should you go there. So getting really good safety instruction and friendly advice available (about the things like tire pressures, brake behavior, engine temps etc) is as useful as driving coaching. PCA DEs often have a reputation of being both officious and sociable but it is all good. A prime objective is to make sure you can drive home! The DE program is nearly as old as the PCA and it is built on a ton of experience.

 

Laps Inc, Hooked On Driving, there are a bunch out there that do track days. Go to your local track(s) website and look at their calendar, then work backwards.

 

Well, before I try a DE, I'm enrolled in a 2-day Barber Racing School hosting PCNA to learn the basics of performance driving. I had one track day 20 years ago one-on-one with a race driver and had a great time wearing out my tires. At PCNA's Performance Driving Course I get to wear out their tires, not mine.

 

That is a great school: you will have a blast.
PS: You have it right- those kind of tires are the best kind!
