Washing My Carrera

Hi,

i am expecting to receive my 991 anytime soon, i so i have a question about washing the. Is it safe to full body wash the car? what about washing it underneath with high pressure water? also washing the engine cover? will water go into the air filters? do i need to take any precautions?

no high pressure especially if you have a clear bra.
engine cover? it's up to you...i don't

Three buckets:
Wash bucket where you put soap and water
Red Bucket - I use the 5 gallon painters buckets
White Bucket

Clean and wash wheels. then:

1. Fill all three buckets with deionized water, Wash Bucket with soap and deionized water.

2. Rinse car with deionized water.

3. Put soft microfiber cloth into wash bucket.

4. Wash top section of car.

5. Rinse cloth in red bucket and squeeze out onto ground then rinse in white bucket and squeeze out onto the ground before returning to wash bucket;

6. Rinse off washed section of car with deionized water.

7. Repeat 3-6 working from top to bottom, front to back.

8. Dry using blower.

I use this protocol and in 13 months, not a swirl not a scratch...my neighbors and my wife think i'm nuts...and I am going to a PCA meeting at a detail shop tomorrow in Doylestown PA to see how the pros do it.

Washing the 991 is cheap therapy for me.

+1 NEVER use a high pressure washer. It puts water where you don't want it, is nowhere near as effective at lifting dirt gently off the surface with a clean very sudsy microfiber wash mit, per the suggestion above. No problem washing the engine cover- the filters are located where you cannot get water to them.

I am a total detail wienie - I'm one of those guys who requested the dealership not prep my car, to avoid swirls, etc. I use an electric pressure washer, and I haven't had problems with it. Yes, you want to avoid certain points, like the frameless windows and the engine compartment, but it's perfectly safe.

And, it's great for wheel wells and the wheels. Plus, you use a ton less water!

I prefer to get the dirt completely off the car prior to rubbing it into a wash mit. I usually prefer wool and frequent rinsing, since it tends to let go of dirt better - I use 2 to cover the car. I only use microfiber for the lower areas of the car.

Flex VRG or a rotary for tough spots.

But yes, for the original poster, it's safe to full body wash the car.

pretty much wash it as any other car. just be more careful about not spraying too much water into the engine lid

washing the under side of the car with pressure washer is perfectly fine

I don't plan to take my Porsche through an automatic wash.

Almost wrecked my Jeep SRT8 in one today.

The washer is one of those that pulls you through on a pulley. The woman in front of me starts continually pushing her brakes when she was supposed to be driving out. This was effectively holding her in place, as the belt was pushing me closer to her. Pushing my brakes did nothing, as I had all four wheels on the conveyer (she only had her rear tires on conveyer). I starting honking my horn and finally an operator shut of the conveyer belt. I think there was less than an inch between my vehicle and hers.

You can wash just about anywhere on the 991. We keep it very simple. Use an all-natural lamb's wool mitt. Mf mitts are fine, but need to be washed after each use. Use quality mf towels to dry the exterior and wipe down the exterior with a spray wax.

As for washing, we simply use one bucket. Here's how:

1. Rinse the whole car and make sure you've flushed off all the dirt
2. Wash half the hood and a fender - MAKE SURE TO WORK FROM TOP TO BOTTOM AND NEVER GO BACK UP
3. Rinse the area you just washed
4. Rinse the mitt
5. Repeat above until whole car is washed
6. Dry using quality mf drying towel

Unless you have DI water, keep irrigating the whole car to avoid drying of water and spotting

Pressure washers are totally OK as long as you're not using those 3000 psi ones. A pressure washer is actually less evasive than your garden hose, more effective, and you're not wasting water

Here's a good one for the money:

I've gone with Moe's advice for the last 5+ years and take it as gospel. Have also used a power washer (Karcher low/medium power) with no issues. Just use common sense and keep the nozzle at least a 3 ft away from the body.

Deionized water is a huge plus. Never, never, run the car through auto car wash or for that sake a regular hand wash business on the street.

On a side note, for me car washing is almost a spiritual activity and is in a sense relaxing and pleasurable. I know it may sound ridiculous but for me it really enhances the overall Porsche ownership experience. I hope you enjoy it as well.

Happy washing!

p.s. Whilst Alan's mind may be in the gutter he's entirely on the right track! Her knee is really close to the door panel.... watch out for that!

I look forward to each weekly washing, with the exception of the dreaded rust that forms on the rotors. No matter how diligent I am at trying to clean it off, the next day the interior of the wheels are a mess and require further cleaning.

I can so understand your frustration. Immediately after washing try using a leaf blower on the rotors... it helps reduce the rust dust issue.
