991 Backup Cam
991 Backup Cam
Somewhere I heard a reference in a thread about a backup cam being a possible option at some point.
Anyone know anything about this? Or anyone making an aftermarket backup cam that easily integrates with PCM?
It would be nice to have something that my wife's toyota had 8 years ago. If did exist and was easily integrated with PCM, I'd consider blowing off the rear parking sensor option...

My dealer told me a client of theirs had it done and it does display via the PCM. I've just emailed him asking to find out more about who does it and who makes the unit, etc. If I learn anything constructive, I'll post it here. I'm as keen to get it as you are because I've come to rely on it in all my cars and miss it when I'm driving a car not so equipped.
Your Porsche has a reverse gear??
Actually, there was a thread for it

Just got this reply from my dealer: "We had too many issue with the 2 installs we had done. One fried the PCM."
Hope someone in 6Speedland knows of a reliable system that's realistically priced and not a warranty voider.

Two things, originally a Back up Camera was scheduled for 2014 models of the 991. However, the US Government requirement for back up cameras was pushed back a year or two into 2015 or so. Thus Porsche didn't have to make available in at least the early 2014 models.
I have a Kenwood Nav/stereo/Bluetooth in my 996 TT Cab (replaced the Porsche PCM due to screen problems) and it works great. My Kenwood dealer says they can integrate a back up camera system part of the Kenwood system into the 991 but I've not seen it done. For Kenwood I'm guessing the actual camera would clamp to the license plate or it's holder on the back as the 996 one does.

Thanks, Chupacabra. I just read that thread but it seems that the one dealer that was reported to have success with it is in NJ, not much help to the OP in SoCal or me in SoFla.
Does anyone in either region know of a dealer that installs rear view cameras integrated into the PCM?

The 2014 Turbo offers it as a very reasonably priced option so I'm hopeful it can be retrofitted to the 2014 C2S.

This works very well for me: http://www.navtv.com/product/260/rgb-pcm3-1-kit.html. You'll need a camera, too.
Yeah, I really wish backup cam was available in 2014.. I've gotten used to it in other cars and love it..
Cool, well it looks like PCM 3.1 accepts external video (no surprise) feed so sounds like there is a way to upgrade it eventually one way or the other.
I'm wondering though how well a 3rd party non-integrated would work.. I assume there is some kind of Aux video input to the PCM, so there would be a need to select it... and I'm guessing that approach won't automatically switch it on like a normal OEM solution which just turns it on when you put car in reverse.
But if I can at least select it, when I want it I guess that would be good enough.

What do you have to do to PCM to make it display (can't remember if there is a aux video select on PCM somewhere).
I'm assuming it doesn't automatically pop up on the PCM display when you select reverse..?
I had it installed by a local company, so I don't know what was involved, except that they said that it would be easy - and it apparently was. It automatically pops up as soon as you select reverse. I use it in conjunction with rear park assist (for audible warnings)...

Yeah, I looked in more detail at the link you sent me.. .Looks like there is some kind of firmware update that is loaded into PCM which makes it all work automatically and detects you are in reverse and switches in..
I noticed there is another product listed for PCM 3.1 that integrates multiple cameras as well for about the same price. So I'll have to investigate...
Thanks, Looks good, I'm pretty sure I'm going to install this...
Saw a post in the other thread, asking why would anyone want this.. lol the first time I don't hit something (or someone) it will pay for itself.. I'm still remembering my mother backing up over a dog once when when I was a kid... ouch...
